Taehyung slid his dress shoes on and tied his tie. He stared at himself in the mirror for a few more minutes.
"Tae, buddy. We gotta go. Jin Hyung is waiting for us." Namjoon said lowly as he put his hand on Taehyung's shoulder. He looked to his hyung and took him in. His slicked hair, his classic black and white suit, his rings, it all looked so nice on him. It was a look he only saw at once or twice. He thinks it was not long ago, at prom?
"Tae, it's time" It was indeed time. He looked over at his reflection one last time and sighed before running his hands through his hair. He nodded and turned, following his best friend out the door and down the stairs to the car where his other best friend, Jin, was waiting.
"You guys ready?" Jin asked as he started the car. The two boys nodded silently and with that, they were off.
Taehyung stared out the window, watching as the place he grew up in flew past him. He was replaying his fondest memories in his head, ignoring the worried glances from his friends. He just wanted to stay in bed and mope.
They reached their destination and found parking. It was pretty cool out, and they were thankful, it wouldn't be very pleasant to be sweating throughout the whole funeral.
"Let's go buddy." Jin said as he tapped Tae's back. Tae looked around solemnly and followed Jin and Namjoon to where his grandmother awaits them. He stood and waited as more people showed up, and the funeral began.
Throughout the funeral, Tae was thinking about the amazing memories he shared with his grandma. It was hard not crying, so he let it out but made sure no one saw him. When it finished, he stayed back an stood over her grave.
" Thank you grandma. For raising me, taking care of me, and putting up with my jokes and complaints and pranks. You were there for all the phases and moods and... Just everything. I'll work hard to be the man you'd be proud of. Someone who you'll happily brag about and say with a proud smile 'I raised that man.' I promise. I hope your at peace granny. " he said and clutched his hand. He swiftly walked away and into the car to head to his grandma and his house.. Well now just his. He had to be there to greet guests and host the gathering.
...
"I'm sorry for your loss Tae. Your grandma and I were close, and she always talked so highly of you." He heard for the millionth time that hour. Luckily people were starting to leave. He just wanted this to be over with so he can sleep away his hurt.
When everyone left, Jin and Namjoon offered to stay back and clean while Tae showered and got ready for bed. He tried refusing, but they heavily insisted, so he gave up eventually and went to shower and get ready to finally sleep. It was something he has been lacking all week.
Tae stood under the hit water for a solid twenty minutes just thinking about this past month, then the past year, then two. He eventually started thinking about his life and everything good and bad. He cracked a few sad smiles thinking of all the silly mischief he would get into and his grandma scolding him. Eventually, he let his facade fall, and let out broken sniffles, water mixing with his tears.
...
It had been months now, and Tae felt like just being in this house made him feel depressed. Being there and surrounded by all his grandma's things. It was hard. He had already went through the stages of denial and now was almost constantly thinking if ways he could have prevented it. From should have, could have and would have scenarios, it was all playing out in hi mind. He was ready to just leave. So that's what he did.
Taehyung ran down the stairs with the last small box of belongings he wanted and packed it into the truck. He found a nice condo the next town down and was starting to get excited for his new beginnings. Maybe this is what he needed, a fresh start. He helped Namjoon get more boxes from the living room and put they in the truck strategically. Well at least Tae thought it was until Seokjin rearranged them in an order he knew Tae would find easiest. As Namjoon put the very last box into the truck, stood outside the house. It was hard leaving now that he thought if it. But, he needs this. Staying would only have made him sad and miserable, leaving is what's making him excited and jumpy. He took a deep breath in and let it out as he heard Jin honk, signaling that he was getting inpatient.
"Til' next time. " he whispered and tired around to jog to the truck. This was the very last trip they had to make, the last time Tae would see the house in a long time. He wasn't selling it, just leaving it. He promised to come back within a year at least.
He slammed the door closed and smiled. Jin drove off and Tae didn't look back. This was going to be the best, plus, he was now finally old enough to live on his own. Adulthood here he comes.
