When I was younger and needed to escape my house, I would always come out here to get some fresh air.

As I walked up the familiar path and passed branches and trees that hadn't moved in years, I came to a small open area. Memories of my childhood danced across my mind.

In the middle was a giant tree with large limbs. Surrounding it was an open area that stretched out ten feet in every direction, void of any trees. This was my special place and not many knew of its existence.

Something about the crisp autumn breeze and the simplicity of nature surrounding me, calmed my inner being. Nothing could ever compare to this.

Walking over to the tree, I placed my bag down and climbed up on the nearest thick branch. I tossed my legs on either side of it, and lay down, closing my eyes.

It wasn't long before my peace was interrupted, by the sound of fluttering wings.

Opening my eyes in search of the cause, I glanced around. The breeze picked up and rustled some leaves but I didn't find the presence of any animal. Resuming my prior position, I closed my lids again. I started to hum the tune to Sound of Silence.

After a few minutes of bliss, I was disturbed yet again by the same flapping sound as before. Annoyed I shot up and looked around again. Left, right, down, up towards the top of the tree. "For the love of all that is mighty...seriously?!"

Nothing. Not even a peep. "I give up."

I plopped down onto the limb again and studied the branches jutting out from the tree. After a few minutes of uninterrupted silence, I closed my eyes again; breathing out a relaxed sigh.

Feeling a small tug of my hair, my eyes slammed open in surprise. I rolled my eyes and groaned, "What now?"

Moving my eyes upwards, I finally saw the current reason for my misery. Staring back down at me from right above my head was the biggest damn crow I had ever seen. "What the fu-." A loud caw interrupting me.

I sat up and moved my leg allowing me to completely turn around. The crow just looked at me with its large black eyes and pointy beak.

"Listen bird, I've seen that Alfred Hitchcock movie. Don't go calling all your little crazy friends and go trying to poke my eyes out. Shoo." I waved my hands towards the bird, which caused it to ruffles its feathers, and cock its head at me.

Looking around myself, I couldn't see any reason that this creature would be hanging around. "I don't have any food for you, sorry."

Realizing what I was doing, I shook my head. Why am I talking to a bird? I've officially lost my mind.

Hopping along the branch, the bird slowly made its way over to me, and placed its oversized body in my lap.

"Contrary to your own belief, you weigh a ton. You might need to lay off the worms or small toddlers." I raised my eyebrow and stared down at the beast. "Whatever it is a bird of your size eats."

As I reached down to pet it, because why would I not pet the bird that so graciously took over my lap, it tried to bite me.

Moving my hand quickly away avoiding the nip, I squinted my eyes at it. "Alrightyyyy, never mind. I guess we're not on that level of friendship yet, jerk." The bird shoved its head into my sweatshirt pocket and shuffled around. "Hey, get out of there!"

I felt my phone vibrate and tried to carefully take it out of my pants pocket, avoiding getting near the bird's mouth again. Seeing Stephs name pop up, I clicked answer.

"Hey chicky, I'm three minutes out."

"Okie, I'll be right there."

Hanging up the phone, I looked down at the crow on my lap. "Sorry bud, but you need to get up. I have to go."

The crow turned its head around and stared at me, eyes unblinking.

I huffed and pushed the bird off of me, hopped off the branch and dusted myself off. I looked down, only to see the crow now pecking at my shoelaces.

"Screw off birdo. Don't you have a murder to attend to?" I scolded as I grabbed my backpack and threw it over my shoulder.

As I walked back down towards the road, the crow followed me, pecking at my laces again. Frustrated I turned around and nudged it with my foot. "Alright I'm serious, now you need to leave." I raised my voice.

Finally, the bird took off in flight and out of sight. I shook my head and muttered to myself, "What is going on today?" I looked up at the sky and bellowed out, "That's right bird brain, you better take off."

Getting closer to the road, I saw Steph's car pull up. I waved her down and took off into a jog. As I opened the door to her car, I felt a small pressure fall onto my shoulder.

Steph bust out laughing as I looked over at my shoulder. "Oh my god, I can't breathe. Hey, at least they say it's good luck."

Bird poop.

"Are you freaken serious? It had to be that damn crow. He's pissed at me."

"At least it's on your sweatshirt."
She handed me some clothing from her backseat. "Could've been on your head. I think I would've literally peed myself from laughing so hard if that was the case. Sorry, not sorry." Opening her glove box, she tossed some napkins onto my lap. "Use these to clean it up if you want. What were you saying about a crow?"

Taking off my sweatshirt and bucking myself in, I began to fill her on my little bird stalker.

"I'm going to start calling you Eliza. Do you have the power to talk to animals? Because that would be awesome."

"Not that I know of. I promise you'll be first to know if I do." I shook my head grinning.

Steph's eyes glanced down to the floor of her car, right by my feet. "Hey Mia, something fell out of your pocket."

I looked down and noticed a small white piece of paper. My fingers reached down and picked it up, flipping it over in my palm, so I could read it. My eyes grew wide at the words in front of me, as my breathing came to a halt.

Steph shook my shoulder. "Earth to Mia. What does it say?"

I looked at the note and then back to her. In cursive font with black ink was scrawled the words, "Don't forget our deal, my dear."
