I walked down our driveway and out onto the path that ran parallel to the main road.
Luckily woods surrounded the area I lived in, if I needed to make a quick escape, a dash into the forest was all that was
needed.
I took out my phone and turned it on for the first time since it had died.
6 missed calls, 5 voicemails, and 9 text messages. Jesus Christmas.
The unknown number I realized was Stephanie's and I saved her under the contact name "Hocus Pocus" I chuckled to myself.
Two of the voicemails were from my parents, two from Joe, and one from my grandmother.
Deciding that my grandma's voice was the only one I could currently tolerate, I pressed play and raised the speaker to my ear.
"Hi sweetie, I know it's been awhile since we've been in touch but I just wanted to let you know...I'm not dead yet!" I could visualize the smile on her face. I smirked, grandma did always have a dark sense of humor. "I just wanted to call and let you know that I'd love to see you soon. Two months apart is too long if you ask me." Pots and pans banged in the background. "If my guilt-tripped voicemail doesn't phase you though, I promise to teach you how to make my famous moon pies whenever you come over."
I ended the voicemail and immediately hit call. I licked my lips and moaned, "Grandmas moon pies."
The phone rang repeatedly and eventually went to voicemail. I left a quick message asking her to call me back and ended the call.
Deciding that I would check the rest of my messages later, I figured I'd call Steph and update her on everything that happened.
"Hello?"
I giggled," Is this the Krusty Krab?"
She huffed, "No, this is Patrick." A laugh escaped her lips. "Damn girl, I know you love me and all but I didn't expect to hear from you so soon."
"It's the sound of your voice. It does things to me. I can't get enough." Lacing my tone with seriousness I began, "But in all seriousness shit has hit the fan."
"Explain."
"The spell worked. Joe is dead."
"WHAT?! Are you serious? Talk about instant gratification. Do you know what happened or how it happened? Tell me everything."
"I don't really know much honestly. My stepdad started blaming Joes death on me, and I couldn't take it anymore and left. I'm now walking along the road, trying to clear my head."
"Wow, that guy sounds like a real winner. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Not to mention, regardless of whether or not you indirectly caused his death, that ass clown had it coming."
"Ass clown?" I couldn't help but laugh at her choice of words.
"That's putting it nicely. Do you need me to come pick you up? I'm still on your side of the river. I decided to stop at a metaphysical store."
"A whoosiewhat store? If you could get me that'd be great."
"A witchcraft store you uncultured swine. Give me thirty minutes and I'll be right there, just pin me your location and sit tight."
"Sounds good pooks. Just call me when you're close. I'll see you soon." I hung up the phone and sent her my location.
I looked around at my surroundings and stopped when I realized, this place felt familiar to me. Off to my right was an old path that lead into the woods towards a clearing.
