After almost everyone was done, Scarlett left the table. Yanjun hadn't noticed until a while when she barely rounded the corner since he was talking to Zhangjing who was saying how good the food tasted and how he was going to sneak into the back to bring home some of their food.
But as soon as she rounded the corner he saw a man who was staring at her during dinner, get up from his seat and follow suit.
The man wasn't much older than him. He may have been twenty-six to thirty. Yanjun couldn't tell, but he could tell that he wasn't up to anything good.
Before he could get up though, Mrs. Huang spoke up. "So, what do you boys have in mind for spring break?"
Yanjun sat still because Mrs. Huang was speaking to all of them and also due to the fact that Mr. Huang just so happened to be watching him as well.
"And how about you, Yanjun? What are your plans for Spring Break," Mrs. Huang asked after asking the others who were happy to give their answers.
"I'm going to visit my family for a couple days. I'm not so sure about after that," he reply politely, offering a dimpled smile.
"How nice," Mrs. Huang smiled brightly.
"What's your major, Son," Mr. Huang questioned sitting up in his seat. Yanjun could see the others stiffen since Mr. Huang didn't really speak to them. He was mainly quiet, but they also feared he would ask them questions. Yanjun didn't blame them, the man was scary.
"English, sir," Yanjun answered carefully.
"Interesting," Mr. Huang nodded. "Have you asked my daughter for any...guidance?"
"No, sir. She's very busy with her own work. I don't think it would be a good idea to distract her."
Mr. Huang stared at Yanjun. His eyebrow raised and his lips pressed into a thin line as he nodded.
"Very well," Mr. Huang nodded sitting back in his chair. Just as Yanjun thought it was over, the man in his late forties spoke again. "You can go ahead and see if Xiulan is okay now."
Beside him, Zhangjing chuckled and he saw the others hiding their smiles. In turn, Yanjun tried to hide his embarrassment, but it was clearly written on his face.
"Th-Thank you, sir," Yanjun got up and bowed before walking off. He muttered curse words under his breath knowing that the others wouldn't let it go.
When he got to the hall, Yanjun saw the man leaning against the wall where just down the way was the men's and women's rooms.
Women really do take long in the bathroom, Yanjun thought as he carefully walked past the man who didn't seem to notice since he stared at the floor.
Yanjun decided to wait in the men's room since Scarlett didn't seem to be coming out anytime soon. He sat in the chair right at the door and listened for the door to open.
He felt like a total stalker doing so, but he knew that guy wasn't just standing there to look cool.
When he heard the door outside open, he waited awhile before exiting the bathroom. When he did, he followed the way back down the hall and turned the corner to see Scarlett's back and the man standing right in her way.
Yanjun knee he would have to step in since the guy was going to bother her. Well, he knew he was going to step in if any man in general tried something with her.
"Listen, you're going to-"
"Babe, is there a problem here," Yanjun asked wrapping a protective arm around the girl and pulling her to him. He felt her trembling against him, her breaths came at a quick pace like she was struggling breathing. Yanjun looked down to see her brown eyes glance up at him before he glared at the man harshly. "What were you saying to her?"
"N-Nothing," the man stuttered. Yanjun searched the man, he was acting all cool before now he's so scared, but then again. Yanjun could be scary when he wanted to be.
"Well then, I think you should be on your way."
"I-Of course. I'll be off." With that, the man turned and quickly left the scene.
Scarlett watched in silence, her heart pounding in her chest and her hands intertwined in front of her.
"You should be more careful," Yanjun said pulling himself away from her even though he didn't want to. He knew he couldn't hold her in that way though.
He fixed his suit and ran a quick hand through his hair, his eyes avoid hers that were watching his movements. "Anyways, they're going to bring Justin's cake out soon so we should hurry back."
"Yeah. Okay," she muttered tucking a strand of hair behind her ear after calming herself. Yanjun watched as she puffed her cheeks before letting out a breath of air. She didn't seem scared any more and she didn't have any injuries so Yanjun turned, he knew what he did wouldn't change anything. He began to walk away, but she stopped him.
"Thank you...Yanjun." A smaller voice said, it wasn't like Scarlett's usual voice. It sounded like a child who had their toy taken, but someone got it back for them.
"...No problem, Crimson."
Although Yanjun wanted to look back at her, he didn't. Yanjun walked back to the table and while he did, he decided one thing.
Even if Scarlett didn't like him the way he wanted to (although he wouldn't admit it), he would win their little game and as his prize he would ask her to go out with him.
