"The baby! The baby!" I kept screaming over and over again.

"Where's our baby? Forth!

We've lost him! Wayo's gone!"

I was shaking on the floor, rattling the side of the empty crib, when Forth found me and lifted me up to my feet. His eyes were darting about the room and he seemed disoriented until his gaze fell on the open window right above the crib. He growled like a wild beast

then. I tore myself from his grip and pushed through the front door and into the raging storm outside. There hadn't been any sign of it before we went to bed and now bolts of lightning shattered the black sky and bathed the shed and the forest in ghostly light every few seconds. The heavy downpour and the deafening thunders muffled my screams.

"Wayo! Wayo!" I kept yelling into the night, still not comprehending how useless it was to call him. He was just a tiny baby! He couldn't hear me or respond to my calls and the thought that he was out there in the arms of an enemy taking him away from us tore

through my convulsing heart like a spear.

"Beam!!" Forth shouted, water dripping down his face, his enormous hands steadying my heaving shoulders. "Beam, listen to me. I need you to calm down. I'm going after him...after them. I'll get our baby back, I swear to you. I need you to go back inside and block

the door and the windows."

"You'll never find him," I shouted back, bursting into uncontrollable tears. "Not in this rain. There are no smells, Forth. They've taken him from us!"

"Go inside and do what I'm telling you. Don't come out until I come back, whatever happens. Do you hear me?"

I was about to say something, but he'd already started transforming into his wolf. One moment he stood in front of me, his solid, massive body looming over me and in the next, in the flash of yet another lightning, he was down on his four legs, the hairs on his back

bristling with aggression. He gave me a slight nudge with his muzzle and I grabbed his big head, kissing the soft, wet fur between his eyes.

"Be careful, alright? Please, find him, Forth. Find our precious son."

He lightly licked my face and with a swift jump, disappeared into the woods. Just like that, I was left alone in the pulsing with electricity darkness, drenched to the bones. I felt paralyzed and kept staring into the direction Forth had disappeared in. Now that he was gone, I completely crumbled down in the pool of mud at my feet. My tears

mixed with the flowing raindrops and I was enveloped in such profound emptiness that not a single cell in my body wanted to move or fight the misery.I didn't know how long I'd stood in the muddy puddle like that, heavy-hearted and broken, but when the light of dawn finally crept between the slick, wet branches of the

forest, I crawled back inside and shut the door. I needed to find something to occupy myself with or I was going to lose it. It hadn't been more than a couple of hours since Forth had left and I doubted he'd be back soon, but the knowledge that I was stuck here

with nothing to contribute to the search only fueled my anxiety. I was completely useless and the empty crib staring back at me accusingly only rubbed salt into the wound.

How could I have left him alone? How could I have fallen asleep without him near me?

What kind of father was I? The guilt was relentless.

Eventually, as the day grew and the overcast sky broke to let in the late morning sun, I remembered Forth's words. I had to barricade myself inside the shed and wait for him, but what use would that be? In fact, I preferred the monsters to come back and take me as
