Confession #1: My name is Andora Morrison and I do not belong here.
I say this not to tawdry imply that I'm a unique little snowflake picked from the special ones above. I say this because my thoughts aren't polite and it makes me come off as an ass inside of an ass. I mean yeah everybody has thoughts they can't say out loud. They keep them to theirselves because they know that everyone will look at them crazy. Some though, don't have the restraint and they become the outcast everyone avoids. For me though, it's a different ballpark.
The thoughts aren't just thoughts...they're my personality. I can't switch it off no matter how hard I try so I'm left with the solution of suppressing it--my own personality. So I'm this bland watered down cabbage soup that nobody wants to try because they know it's going to be...fucking bland. I'm left to either be bland or a ticking time bomb ready to hurt someone's feeling, so imagine being in my place.
My mother used to know how to handle me. She told me not to dwell on the bad things in life as they are never going to stop existing. She and I were like a perfect yin and yang and balanced each other perfectly. Then she was murdered and the optimistic part of brain died--or maybe disappeared...all I know is it hasn't been here for a while.
"Dora," A pair of hands dove into my view. I narrowed my eyes in the direction of a set of sharp forest green eyes with a blunt tightly held between the tip of his thumb and index finger. His name was Kai Max Hawkins, and when he first told me it I thought he was trying to prank me.
"No way," I squinted at him. "That's like a skater's name, or a scammer who has colon cancer and needs six million dollars for treatment."
"It's on my birth certificate, Mom didn't have much time to put much thought into it. My name was her last words, my dad went with it," He shrugged.
"I guess that's a good way to go out," I took a swig of the off brand beer. "I was asleep when my mom was murdered."
"Damn," He stared me right in the eye. "That sucks."
Maybe that's why we got a long so well. Because we didn't bullshit each other. He didn't sugar coat anything thus the reason he always showed up with a new bruise printed somewhere on him. I couldn't tell if it was from his father or someone he instigated into a fight. I never bothered to ask just like he never bothered to ask why I had a bulletin board dedicated to serial killers and their victims in the past decade.
"Dora, you're dosing off again," This time he pushed my shoulder.
"I told you not to call me Dora."
"Come on it's cute," He chuckled.
"It's not," I sharply grit out.
"It is."
"It's not."
"It is."
"It's not."
"It is."
"It's not."
"Kai," A fews girls run up behind the couch Kai and I are sitting on. I've seen them around school, but don't positively recall their names as they just run together as if they're one person. I do notice one resting her hand in Kai's hair. I don't blame her, it softer than a baby's ass. "We're going upstairs to play a few little games. You should come up with us too."
Kai was pretty popular at our school. People that thought he was charming often ignored the fact that he was damned arrogant asshole. Still, I could understand how easy it was to get lost in an endless forest that seemed enchanting and alluring. I could also see how easy it was to get attacked by a bear in said forest and left heavily injured. That's why I always avoided the forest making sure not to drift into anything that could possibly hurt me.
I hope you get what I'm saying.
If you don't, you'll get it later.
"I would ladies but I have to finish this argument. Little Andora here doesn't like pet names," He patted my head full of untamed curls.
"Because I'm not a fucking pet Kai," I ripped his hand out of my hair, it was easy to get stuck in it and I didn't want another accident that resulting in me cutting a chunk of my hair out. "Ladies please take him before I throw him out the window."
The girls laughed. Definitely wasn't joking.
"Alright fine I'm coming, meet me up there," He passed the blunt back to me. The girls coyly smiled and ran upstairs as we watched them leave. "Pretty sure the game they want to play isn't monopoly."
"Nobody plays monopoly anymore Kai," I raised the blunt to my mouth, slowly inhaling the marijuana induced air and exhaling it back out. "The human attention span is too short for it."
"My bad Andi," He directs his sarcastic attitude towards me. "Is Uno ok? Sorry? Yahtzee?"
"Uno is too bland, Sorry starts fights, and Yahtzee is for old sad people," I explained.
"How about my dick."
"Too small for anyone to get off," Kai nudged my head.
"You think you're so funny," I smirked looking at the haze of smoke that filled the air. "Speaking of funny, you're staying over tonight right?"
"Wow such a smooth transition," I faked admiration. "And yeah, will you're dad be mad if I'm here?" I knew his dad wasn't a fan of me. One time I came over and he told me I smelled like ganja then he walked upstairs into his office and slammed the door. Kai swore it wasn't personal, that he hated everybody.
"Probably."
"I can take a uber--"
"No, no need. He would never do anything to embarrass himself in front of other people."
"Does that mean he'll do something to you when I leave?"
He pauses and lets out a long sigh. "Andi I just need someone with me. I don't care if he beats me to fucking death for it."
We didn't bother saying anything else to each other.
