Somewhere far away in the open ocean waters lies Hando island.
The waves crash on the sandy beaches, delicious fruit grows on the trees and seagulls roam the skies. The port is always lively during the day, but the boats all leave when the clock strikes four and a half in the morning and it's time to go fishing. There are two different ice cream shops and the families hate each other for being competition, but the two sons are in a secret relationship. There's a small food market where you can buy freshly picked peaches and you have tiny shops selling souvenirs too. The restaurants are all completely full by lunch time and the delicious aroma of grilled fish and vegetables fills the narrow alleyways of the town centre. The few hotels are constantly looking for staff and it's easy for the local children to find jobs there as maids or cleaners. The only tourist company organises different excursions where tourists can go snorkeling, take a hike through the forest, visit the most hidden beaches or even go to the top of the volcano that's on the island.
Hando is a perfect tourist destination and it seems like a dream to live there, but it's most beautiful in the late afternoons. That is when most of the locals finish work, go up the hill to their house and sit outside. Tea and pastries are brought out and they stay there, with the sea breeze caressing their skin and watching the sun set in the ocean. The sky is painted red, orange and yellow and in those calm and peaceful moments they are thankful and happy.
