Raelyn grumbled gripping the steering wheel of her father's car, taking a sharp turn left and pulling over.
"Zane." She growled, "You're being really REALLY quiet. Whats going on? You feeling alright?"
"Yeah, yeah... I'm fine." Zane rolled his eyes, leaning against the door of the car, pulling up the hood on his green hoodie.
Raelyn glanced at where his hoodie edged up, and pulled the car over to the side of the road.
"Zane. Take off your shirt." She commanded, stepping out of the car and opening the passenger door so he could get out.
"WHAT." Zane grabbed at the edges of his hoodie, his face turning bright red.
"I said, take off your shirt." Raelyn glared, before grabbing his hoodie and pulling it off. She tossed it into the passenger side of the car, inspecting his arms, curiosity enveloping her gaze.
Zane pulled his arms in closer, grabbing at the side of his grey undershirt. Raelyn groaned, clearly not happy with what she saw.
"Come on, keep going." She coaxed, Zane shook his head. She growled, pulling her long black hair into a ponytail.
"Zane Elise Lux. Take off your shirt this fucking instant."
Zane lifted his shirt up slightly, and Raelyn grabbed the edge, holding it in place.
"That's what I was afraid off." She sighed, then looked up, her blue eyes full of sympathy.
Zane's back was covered in long, purple, belt shaped bruises. Red welts and fist marks were scattered all over his shoulders.
"Zane, I'm so fucking glad I got you away from your house, do you not see what she does to you!?"
Zane nodded wordlessly, his eyes downcast and his floppy blonde hair was in front of his face.
She grabbed him quickly into a hug, she was taller than him, by about six inches, so she easily held his small frame in her arms.
He hugged her back, laying his arms on her hips, which were, crazily, wider than he was.
Raelyn lifted him up effortlessly, placing him back into the passenger seat.
"Zane you're my... My bestfriend... So I'm taking you back to my home, my Dad says it's fine if you stay there permanently. You're eighteen? Right? So this is legal." Raelyn blushed, concentrating fiercly on the road.
Zane smiled "I'd like that.."
"I knew you would." She grinned, focasing back on getting home.
"How's Cloud by the way?" Zane asked, remembering the snarky albino wolf who was bonded to Raelyn. He'd been great friends with Zane's bonded Aria, before... Zane shook his head sharply, clearing his mind of negative thoughts.
"Oh, he's good." Raelyn shrugged, "Still mourning Aria. Kala and Quartz bring him little scraps of metal that he likes to play with, so he's pretty happy with that."
Zane remembered the fearsome but very tiny blacksmith Kala and her cartoonishly large bonded Quartz a Smiladon with the ability to change any part of his body into any type of mineral or stone.
They contrasted each other perfectly, Quartz towering over six feet tall, and Kala only reaching a measly four foot ten, despite being sixteen. Kala had anger issues, but Quartz was relatively calm all they time. The two were inseparable, having been bonded from birth, unlike both Zane and Raelyn.
"Cora?" Zane asked, thinking of their taller, Pangender friend. They had short curly blonde hair and dark skin. Their bonded was a small ball python named Domi, he always slept in his bonded humans hair. Cora didn't mind, they were happy with almost anything.
"How's their crush on Kala going?"
"Their dating now!" Raelyn squealed excitedly, Zane knew she had always shipped her two friends. "They kissed accidentally a few weeks ago, and Cora ran away pretty quickly. I don't know the rest, but I do know they're dating!"
Zane smiled, his friend looked very happy.
"Oh shoot! I missed your brothers birthday! How'd that go?" Zane facepalmed, groaning.
"That's ok, you probably wouldn't have made it anyway." Raelyn smiled softly, patting Zane on the back comfortingly. "Alex was very happy, he came back from college for the weekend, which was fun! But the best part was when my Dad reveal everyone had pitched in to buy him top and bottom surgery! He was so happy he cried and then whispered 'Fuck binders... This will be so much better.' Then he burst into tears again."
Zane grinned, her brother had been suffering from very severe dysphoria when Zane and his mother had moved away, so he was glad to hear that Alex was happy.
"Michael hasn't given you any trouble has he?" Zane whispered, knowing this was a touchy subject with her. But luckily she just shook her head before smiling.
"No, not ever since I got stabbed during 'The great battle' as we're apparently calling it, according to Rose." She started laughing, glancing down at her stomach. Zane winced, remembering watching her reach for her broadsword, but just before she could grab it, their enemy, and the leader of the Dragon army's bonded, Shadow, grabbed it in his mouth. The great panther pulled out he sword and stabbed Raelyn through the stomach. He remembered her looking down slowly, before laughing and collapsing, and just before she faded out of consciousness, she had whispered, 'You don't stab with a broad sword, Dumbass.'
Zane shivered, gripping at his shirt. He then reached over and grabbed his hoodie, slipping it on and staring at the road in silence.
He really didn't want to realize that memory, he didn't want to relive their fight, he didn't was to realive Aria's death, or watching Kala get her leg ripped off. He didn't want to remember any of it, but the memories were still fresh in his mind, despite 'The great battle' happening over two years ago.
"You good?" Raelyn looked over, Zane nodded, smiling weakly.
"I'm just ready to get... To get home."
"Glad to hear that." Raelyn placed one hand on his shoulder, and Znae stiffened, his face turning bright red and he hoped she wouldn't notice.
"Zane, I'm alive, you're alive, almost everyone who went on that mission in alive." She whispered gently, tightening her grip on his shoulder. "You're safe now."
