Percy sat on Annabeth's floor, using her bed as a table as he did his homework. Annabeth sat next to him, doing the same. Percy chewed on his pencil, his eyebrows knit together in concentration.
"Don't do that," Annabeth scolded him lightly. "You'll ruin your teeth and your pencil." Percy frowned.
"But this is hard," he complained. She turned to face him.
"Math?"
"Math."
"Okay, here's what you do. You divide the whole equation by sin(36) and then you..." he watched her explain the problem to him, not really paying attention to what she was saying. His attention shifted to her hair. She often complained about her curly hair, but he liked her golden curls. He almost reached out to touch a stray curl, but he caught himself. Stupid, he told himself. Hands away from the curls.
"Percy? Percy!" Annabeth's voice brought him out of his thoughts.
"Annabeth?" he asked meekly. She sighed.
"Were you even paying attention to what I was saying?" she asked.
"Um. Maybe not," he said guiltily, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I'll explain the problem again, but try to pay attention this time." He watched her explain the problem to him again, careful to listen to what she was saying.
~~~~~~~the next day~~~~~~~
The bell rang, signaling the start of first period. Percy slammed his locker shut and jumped when he saw Grover leaning next to his locker.
"Geez, Grover, how long were you standing there?" he asked.
"Long enough. Come on, let's go to class."
"Late again, Mr. Jackson," said Mr. Blowfis as they walked through the door.
"Come on, Paul. 'Mr. Jackson'?" Percy complained as he slid into his seat behind Annabeth. Paul raised an eyebrow at him and turned to Grover.
"You too, Mr. Underwood." Grover sat in his seat without a word.
"Now, turn to your homework on page 164."
"Hey, Wise Girl," Percy said, leaning forward.
"Seaweed Brain," Annabeth said, the smile in her voice obvious.
"Hm, someone's happy today. I wonder why?"
"Well, you'll have to keep wondering," she said lightly, snapping her binder shut.
"Come on, tell me! What's got Annabeth Chase all smiley today?" he asked.
"Not telling."
"Good book you're reading?"
"I wouldn't be talking to you right now if it was that."
"Ouch. Uh, good song on the radio this morning?"
"You know I don't listen to the radio," she deadpanned.
"Ooh, and she's salty today. Let's see. Found a lucky penny today?"
"Really? A lucky penny?" He could almost see her rolling her eyes at him.
"Well, it was worth a shot."
"No, it wasn't."
"Hot date?"
"No thanks to you." Percy's textbook slipped out of his fingers and landed on the ground with a loud thump. The room was suddenly silent. Percy looked up at Paul, who was frowning at him.
"Sorry, sir." Percy grabbed his textbook and put it carefully on his desk. "No thanks to you?"
"It got you to drop your book."
"Touché."
~~~~~~~at lunch~~~~~~~
Percy sat down next to Annabeth, under a tree.
"Forgot your lunch again?" he asked, noticing her lack of a lunch. She nodded. He offered her half of his sandwich.
"Thanks," she said, taking it. She just stared at it for a moment, not doing anything.
"You know," Percy ventured, "you're supposed to eat it. Like a normal human being." He took a bite out of his half.
"Shut up," she said, smiling slightly. He shrugged.
"Okay. But I notice that you're still not eating."
"Perseus Armedius Jackson-"
"I'm joking, I'm joking," he said quickly. She smiled up at him and he felt his heart skip a beat, which was stupid, since he'd seen her smile a million times. She was his best friend, after all.
"So why were you so happy this morning?" Percy asked her, after she finally took a bite of his sandwich.
"My dad got a promotion," she said, still smiling slightly.
"That's great!" he said, grinning. She nodded.
"Yeah, it is."
They fell into a comfortable silence. That was one of the things Percy liked best about being with Annabeth. Silence wasn't awkward or uncomfortable, it was just natural. It was just them.
Author's Note:
Welp. This is stupid and really bad, but I've been wanting to write this for a while. So. Um. Good. Yup. Bye.
