Six years after Phoebe's only friend disappears from the neighbouring orphanage without a trace, she finds a portal to another realm. She makes the mistake in entering it, and into Lerridon. Learning that her disappeared friend, Lucifer, has taken o...
Grey clouds were gathering in the sky. Still, the children from both orphanages streamed out when the bell rang. Most gathered at the wire fence dividing the two orphanages from each other.
The boys, and the girls.
Phoebe looked warily at the sky and settled for sitting on the front steps, in the shelter. The other girls were hanging around the wire fence, shouting at the boys.
On the other side, one lone boy sat at the corner while the others either played soccer or shot insults back at the girls. His name was Lucifer.
One of the rowdy girls came up to Phoebe. "Come on, join the fun! We can't let the boys win," she said, gesturing to the match of the insults taking place.
Phoebe shook her head. She'd rather read her book. The girl, Megan, frowned. Her face darkened as she stomped her feet.
"Stop reading that stupid book! It looks so boring! Come on!" she yelled, ripping the book from Phoebe's hands.
Phoebe opened her mouth, and a barrage of insults came out.
"How dare you! Have you even read the book? I bet that you're too stupid to read it, anyways," she screamed, her lips quivering with anger.
From there, it turned into a fight. They yelled at each other incomprehensible words and pulled at each other's hair.
One of the older girls, Annie, who was eleven, stepped in. She wrapped her arms around Phoebe and pulled her back.
"Stop fighting, you two! It's time to go back," she said.
Annie acted like the mother the orphans never had. She was always there to break up the fights and help them when they had problems. She was the oldest, after all.
As Annie pulled Phoebe back into the orphanage, Phoebe glanced over her shoulder. It had started to rain, and the ground was getting muddy. She looked over to the boy's side. Lucifer stared at her, and his lips lifted up to a smile.

The same bell rung again. This time, signaling that it was bedtime. Phoebe tucked herself in and waited for the girls to fall asleep. When they did, she turned on her hidden flashlight, sat up, and continued reading her book.
After what seemed like hours, she finally felt tired and was ready to turn in for the night. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a lamp on in the boy's orphanage. She turned over, and again, saw Lucifer. His blue, blue eyes sparkled in the gleaming light and his lips curved up in a smile again. This time, she smiled back.
