I groaned in pain. The headache was unbearable and my vision became blurred. My body shivered and my breathing was heavy, with beads of perspiration appearing on my forehead. My blood pressure and heart beat rose, consequently the medical machine sounded the emergency alarm. The nurse and the doctor dressed in their usual white coats came filing in the room.
The doctor immediately examined the medical instruments and noted down the readings while the nurse checked my pulse rate and adjusted the glucose dripper to the appropriate concentration.
"Two ml of cynocytosin and a drop of formalin", the doctor addressed the nurse. The nurse obeyed, exactly as the doctor said and filled the injection with the medicine. After carefully pumping out the excess air, the nurse searched for my blood vessel and carefully injected in the injection.
I whimpered out in pain. Subsequently the pain subsided and after a few minutes, my breathing and heart rate was back to normal. The doctor directed the nurse to do something and the nurse as usual obeyed him and left the room without uttering any other word.
Slowly my vision was back to normal and I tried to sit up, but my weak physical condition prevented me from doing so. The doctor seeing my struggle helped me to sit up. I glanced across the room. It was a different one; I was transferred here from another room. The ceiling and walls were painted white. The bed was in the middle with the medical instruments on one side and the glucose dripper and oxygen tank on the another. I was in a white uniform with some tubes connected to my veins on my hand. The other end of the tube was connected to medical devices to record my health status.
When my attention shifted towards the doctor, he tried to smile, "How are you feeling?"
My mouth was dry and I felt tired, "I felt like someone was hammering my head from inside and it would eventually split up. But after the medication, I am feeling better."
"kala...kalarjian...Dr kalarjian", I murmured to myself as I squinted my eyes to read his name tag.
After writing a lot deal of something in the file that he was carrying around, he asked me, "Have you remembered anything back?"
I tried to concentrate but I can't remember a single thing about the recent two years of memories that I lost. The more I concentrated, the more exhausted I felt. "No, nothing", I eventually sighed.
He paused for a few seconds, let out a sigh and then continued writing. I can't remember anything about the previous two year. I woke up in the operation theatre in extreme pain. The doctor successfully performed the operation, but I still suffered from sudden pangs of extreme pain. After the few hours, we also discovered that I suffered from amnesia.
"Will I remember everything back", I voiced my thoughts in a monotonous voice because of the tiredness.
He paused again, and thought, as if searching for the right words, "It's been only a week since the accident, we can't tell for sure anything right now. You may or you may not remember everything back."
Just the thought of not remembering back, made me shudder with anxiety.
"You need to go through some tests and therapies before we could confirm anything", he closed his file and gave me a encouraging smile.
There was a knock on the door. The doctor opened the door, revealing my parents, worry etched on their face. "Is he okay?", my mother asked with tears clearly visible in her eyes. "We gave him the medications, his condition should be better now. If anything happens again, just call the staff", and by this the doctor took his leave.
My mother came to me and hugged me. "My child! You will be okay", she whispered and kissed my cheeks. She was on the brink of another emotional breakdown. My father gave me a weak smile and sat beside me.
I tried to smile back for them but I failed. I hated being in hospital and being depended on medicine. I hated that I was the cause of my parents worry. I hated the fact that I lost my two years of memories.
I don't even remember the night of my accident. "What happened? How did I end up in the hospital?", I asked my parents hoping that knowing the cause of the memory loss would somehow help me to regain the memories back.
My parents looked at each other before my father replied, "You were driving the car, going to a lodge in the woods, when your car collided with a truck on the highway. The driver of the truck was drunk and was driving very fast. You were lucky that despite the severe accident, you survived."
I let the new found information sink into my brain. Gathering the courage, I asked the question which I was dreading, "Was someone else with me in the car? What happened to the truck driver?"
They became tensed and a sign of guilt flashed across their face. "No, you were the only one in the car. The truck driver is wounded badly but he is alive", my mother replied.
"But why was I-"
"Enough for today. Lucas, you should get some rest", my father interrupted my question and tried to change the topic. I didn't have the energy to argue so I closed my eyes, but the thoughts denied me sleep.
What if I didn't get my memories back? I searched my brain to remember anything but all I found was an infinite abyss of darkness. There was also a constant nagging in my brain, that I was forgetting something important. Eventually the tiredness consumed me and I fell into a deep slumber.
