My phone blinks the yellow flashing light to let me know I've just received a new Snapchat message from Damon. I figure he's just asking for the normal, like cigarette money or for me to drop whatever I'm doing and give him a ride... even though he lives an hour away. He knows me. He knows that I always do what he asks. That's probably why we've been best friends since the fourth grade. We've been through everything together. He's the only one of my so-called friends who stood by me through the endless crap of adolescence.
I live in Texas. The old country part where there is nothing to do and nowhere to go but a run down mall and a few parks. When you live in this area, you have to find something to do to keep yourself occupied. I guess that's why Damon and his friends have been getting into trouble lately. Texas is not what you might think, where everything seems normal and Southern.
I will correct you there. This part of the state is probably the most screwed up place I've been. There are druggies everywhere you go, and when you turn around there is always someone smoking something. You never know what they're smoking because it really could be anything.
Living in a place like this, you will come across some friends that do a lot of the illegal activity that goes on around here. I've known Damon for a long time, and he hasn't always been like this.
When I finally got through with eating, I checked my phone and I saw that I had received five different messages and three missed calls from Damon.
He must be in actual trouble this time.
"I need help, please. Answer me as soon as you can. I don't have anywhere else to go."
I called him immediately while hoping he would pick up. The more it rings, the more anxious I get.
"Rose?" Damon said quietly.
"Damon! Oh my gosh, are you ok?" I yelled a little bit too loud over the phone.
"Yes, I'm fine. I need your help. I robbed a house and now the cops are looking for me, I need to stay at your house or something. Please." Damon rarely ever begged, but when he did I knew it was for something serious. He would never lower his pride when it came to wanting something.
"I can't let you stay here, Damon. The cops will find out where you are and I will get in so much trouble. I don't know where you can go."
As I finished my sentence, I heard someone speak over the phone while Damon was about to speak.
"Who's that?" I asked, I hope no one else was involved.
"That's Callie. She came with me and helped me pack up the stuff from that house I robbed. I got some pretty cool stuff though, you should see-"
"Callie is in on this too?! Damon, why did you do that to her?" He hated me yelling at him and acting like I was his parent. He never took authority too well.
"Yes, I took her with me. She offered to help, I didn't put her through anything."
"No, what you put her through was horrible. Even if she offered, it still was wrong. She will get in trouble too."
"Well, if she does then we will still be together. I'll show you." Damon then hung up the phone.
I sat there, on my bed just thinking about what is about to happen. If he gets arrested, I don't know what I will do. And Callie doesn't know what she gotten herself into either. I will call him tomorrow, everything will have settled by then. Maybe he won't be mad at me anymore.
I woke up the next morning and immediately checked my phone. Nothing. I tried calling him but no one answered. I figured he was still asleep so I walked to the kitchen. I sat down on a stool next to the kitchen dining table. I had juice and a bowl of cereal staring at me, just waiting for me to dig in but I wasn't feeling too good. My anxiety level reached the top where I just wanted to cry.
Damon was mad at me, he might be in jail, his girlfriend as well, and I might never hear from him again. I couldn't stop racing those factors in my head. Knowing he could be in big trouble and I can't do anything about it. I could have done something last night. I could have hid him in my room or in the shed in the backyard. I didn't do anything and I will forever regret that.
"Hey honey, how is your morning going?" My mom said, while she walking behind me into the kitchen. We lived in a small apartment in the middle of Longview, Texas. It was just us, ever since my father left my mother. But my mom dates quite a bit. We didn't make much money, but we made enough to get by.
"I don't know Mom, I think Damon could be in big trouble." I never looked up to look at her, I just stared at my cereal and juice and waited for her to give me the advice that helped me through anything. She always had the perfect thing to say to make me feel better. I don't think anything could help me through this though.
"So you heard?" My mom asked. I finally looked up and saw she was holding the daily newspaper we always got. I never read it, but my mom always did. She thought it was very important to keep updated on what was going on in the area.
"Can I see that?" I grabbed the newspaper and flipped through it to finally see Damon's face on the page. I read the entire thing to realize he had been arrested last night. He had stole his mother's car and tried to find a place to keep quiet.
I could have helped him. This is all my fault.
