She crouches behind a bush, the darkness of the night giving her enough cover. Her cat-like senses giving her the ability to see in darkness. She listened intently to her surroundings, taking in the rustling of the leaves and the chirping of the birds. She went to move forward and a branch snapped behind her.

She froze, the only noise she could hear was her heart pounding in her ears. Minutes ticked by and she was still to scared to move, her body stiff as she prayed the darkness gave her enough cover to not be noticed.

She gave a breath of relief and started slowly walking to the next bush, being careful not to step on any branches. The tree line ahead of her breaks and she can see the court yard spanning out for, what seems like, miles. The large stone gates to the left, towers with two guards in each by the wooden door.

I watch the scientist scurry by, their lab coats trailing behind them. Anger filled my veins at even the thought of them, everything they put me through with no remorse. This is why I am escaping, I was tired of being mistreated, and I just wanted to find a place to call home. To make real friends and start a family!

I watched for a while longer, waiting for it to be mostly clear before moving. The leaves crunching under my feet would draw attention to anyone too close. So as the night got later the scientists outside the lab dwindled, and it was now my time to make my move.

With my head down I began moving through the thickness of the trees and towards the break of the forest. I turned to check behind me, and I was faced with a small boy. I jumped back and it took every fiber in my being not to scream. I felt my hand close around the handle of my knife.

He looked about my age, scraggly brown hair and piercing hazel eyes. He had a scar running down his nose and a newly formed gash on his cheek. My eyes softened, my grip loosening on my blade. My eyebrows furrowed, and I asked him a silent question. He held out his left wrist, pointing to the tattoo that everyone gets when they first arrive. It read, "#23".

I was shocked at first, he had been here longer than me. But how come I never bumped into him in the halls, or saw him at lunch hour? I wanted to ask him why he was here, but I didn't want to risk some scientist, or patrolling guard hearing me.

So I just turned around, keeping him in the corner of my eye. Still not knowing if I could trust him or not. My plan ran through my mind, the guards take 30 minute naps at 2am 4am and 6am every morning and evening. I left my cell at around 2:30 and I've been here for around 20 minutes or so.

We waited for the first guard to shuffle out, the other ones following closely behind. Talking tiredly among themselves. I motioned for the guy to follow me as we made our way to the gate. I pulled my knife carefully out of my pocket, planning on using it to pick to large lock.

I looked back at the forest, not seeing 23 behind me. He was hesitantly looking left and right from behind a tree. I snicker lightly and motioned for him to come forward. He slowly nodded and stood from his spot, carefully walking toward me.

Pulling out my knife, I want to work on the lock. The tip of my knife sliding into the lock and I began juggling it around, trying to find the right combination. After a couple of minutes of fighting with the lock. A satisfying click could be heard and the lock snapped open and fell to the floor.

I smiled at myself and turned to 23. But he was turned around, facing the building. A look of panic on his face. Quickly I understood why he was scared when someone yelled.

"What are y'all doing?!" It was a deep male voice, I figured it was a guard. But I wasn't going to stand here any longer and risk being captured. So, I grabbed his wrist and began running into the forest ahead of us. Following along a thin, mostly overgrown dirt path.

"Hey!" The guard yelled after us and I could hear his footprints close behind. I was zig zagging, going off path. Just trying everything I could to lose him. But nothing seemed to be working. That's when I saw it, my lungs were burning and my legs ached

But their was our escape. It was an old, abandoned shack. The siding was peeling off and the roof was basically caving in. The guards footsteps were quiet enough that he wouldn't see us go in. So I made a mad dash to the building and hid in the darkness, away from the door-less entrance.

My body was pressed against the moist wall, and I could see 23s silhouette. The guards footprints slowed as he walked around the area, speaking into his radio.

"Yeah, two experiments escaped during second break." The radio went silent, and he spoke into it again "I'm going to need back up" panic rushed through me, I could put run one guard. But a whole patrol of them, that's about 6 or 7. If we didn't move now, we would be caught.

My night vision kicked in, the darkness hiding me enough as the guard looked around the area. Turning his back on the shed, I grabbed my knife. Carefully pulling it out of my pocket, I walked towards him. Crouched down slightly and careful not to step on any sticks, or leaves.

Soon, I was right behind him. I jumped up, grabbed his mouth and quickly slit his throat before he could struggle to much. He feel to the floor, making gurgling choking noises as he tried to breath. I sighed, turning to go get 23. He was standing in the doorway, a look of horror on his face.

I motioned for him to come and help. "Come on, we gotta get rid of him" I said, grabbing on to his arms. 23 joined me and grabbed his legs and we carried him to a large bush. Throwing him inside. It covered him mostly, and we continued moving. I wiped my blade on my shirt and put it back into my pocket.

And the journey began!
