aaliyah's pov
1962
Charleston, South Carolina
11:32pm

I was putting my silk nightgown when my house phone , the most expensive thing I had was ringing.

That must be Grayson.

I hurried and ran to it before I would miss the call.

"Hello?"
"Hello dove." I heard his raspy , deep voice say.
"Well you called me just in time, I was about to lay down."
"I'm sorry, I took long to call you , something came up."
"It's fine. Are you okay? You sound exhausted."
I hear him quietly sigh into the phone.
" I'm okay it's just work. Don't you worry your pretty little head about me , darlin'."
I felt heat rushing to my cheeks and stayed silent.
"I know you're blushing."
I was speechless.
"What time does your bus come?"
"Um. 7:30am."
"I'll see you there then. And bring snacks , it's a pretty long ride.
I laughed.
"Okay mister."
"Ugh, I hate it when you call me that."
"Well , what do you prefer me to call you then."
"Your boyfriend soon but we're not at that level yet."
"I'll just stick with Grayson from now on."
"I'm okay with that , dove."
I yawned.
" I know it's late and you have to get up early so I'll let you go."
" thank you. Goodnight boo."
"Boo huh? I like it."
I realized what I said and hung up the phone quickly.

                                 . . .

7:12am

grayson's pov

I wait patiently at the bus stop with no aaliyah in sight.
"Where is she?" I mumbled to myself
I look down the road to see if the bus is coming and it is.
"I'm here! I'm here!" I hear a soft voice say.
Aaliyah.
I looked in her direction and instantly melt.
She had on a tight floral dress showing all of her curves just below the knee, her long and shiny black hair in wavy curls and white heels.
"You look ravishing." I blurt out
She blushed and smoothed our her dress.
So adorable.
"I- I bro-brought you so-some sna-snacks like you asked." She said stuttering showing me some potato chips she had inside of her purse.
aww.
" thank you dove."
I grabbed her hand but she quickly pulled away looking around.
"Grayson, we are in public."
"So?"

See, where Grayson grew up , segregation and discrimination didn't exist for everything was integrated before he was born.

Before aaliyah could respond, the bus came and she got on quickly and taking a seat and not saving Grayson one , making him have to seat in the front with racist bigots.

While during the whole ride , he couldn't help but wonder

"What did I do wrong?"
