When you're writing fan fiction, and you're making your character in first person, and they're meeting a character for the first time, make sure you know what race/culture a character conforms to.
For example, Nina Dobrev. Most people think she is a person of color, but she is not. So before you label her, or someone for what they look like, do research or just say "I saw a person that had blah blah blah" to make a description of the character.
