Chapter 2

When the bar opened that night Harry ended up working the door with Liam, so he didn't see much of Lil unless he peaked his head in the door to make sure everything was going smoothly. Lil worked the bar with Max and she didn't seem to stop moving all night. Every once in a while she'd do a shot for a drunken patron that would buy it for her and she'd end up with various numbers that were handed to her with her tip, they always went in her pocket; she never through them away.

Max made his first appearance of the day just as the bar opened. He emerged from his office and immediately started serving drinks. He didn't say anything to Harry. Harry was going to thank him but instead Liam grabbed his attention and motioned for him to join him outside. They each had a stool and checked IDs for the majority of the night. Once the bar was at full capacity they told everyone to go home and had to call cabs for a few people that straggled along afterword.

After everything was calmed down a bit Liam went inside to get Harry and himself a drink. The motioned toward the bar when he stepped inside and after a second Lil walked out to accompany Harry. "Hey." Harry greeted.

Lil lit a cigarette and sat on the stool opposite Harry, "Hey." She seemed distant, like she realized that her previous conversation with Harry was wrong and she was trying to prevent another one.

It bothered Harry. He felt like nothing was wrong and nothing bad had happened and he needed to correct it. "What's wrong?" He asked.

Lil glanced at him and shook her head. She took a drag from her cigarette and ignored Harry's question.

"Come on, I didn't offend you earlier, did I? That wasn't my intention, I just wanted to get to know you." Harry blurted.

She shook her head again and chuckled at Harry, "Harry..." she paused and licked her bottom lip in thought, "You seem like a good kid. You're just trying to make it through until you hit it big with whatever your dreams and aspirations are. I'm not here to make friends that I don't need. I'm here to work in a bar."

Harry scoffed, "If you didn't want to talk to me you could have told me so instead of making me feel like I did something wrong."

Lil sighed and facepalmed, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel like you did something wrong. I just didn't realize what I did until after it was done."

Harry didn't say anything for a few minutes. He just watched his surroundings while Lil quietly smoked her cancer stick. She slid off the stool and opened the door. Harry watched her as she motioned to Liam who was returning from the bar. He walked up to her and she took one of the waters from him and leaned in to his ear so he could hear her speak. He pulled away and looked at her and mouthed something that Harry couldn't hear over Seether on the jukebox. Lil nodded at Liam and he shrugged and mouthed something else. He turned around and headed back toward the bar. Lil stepped out and let the door swing closed against her back, "Let's start over. Hi, I'm Lil."

Harry smiled and put his hand out, yet again, for her to shake. "Harry."

After the bar closed Lil disappeared. Harry went back inside to help clean up before he went back to his apartment and face planted his bed from sheer exhaustion. He was wiping down a table when the front door opened and Lil stepped in, she was bleeding from her arm and it was running down her hand. It caught Harry off guard. He looked at her shocked and she looked him dead in the eye. He was going to rush to her aid but she just shook her head slowly. Harry couldn't comprehend his next action but he nodded to her, without breaking her gaze. He resumed wiping the table and watched as she walked behind the bar and disappeared up the stairs that lead to Max's office.
