Rick
The rain pelted down on the runners as we crossed the finish line into our last lap around the track. The sky was a deep dark blue above us. Rain stuck my hair to my face. I was somewhere close to the front of the line, third or fourth. Ahead of me I could make out the silhouette of another runner. From the way it moved I could tell something wasn't right. The runner was convulsing, their arms flying all around them and their steps were labored.
A cry rang out through the rain. It was a piercing cry, full of agony. The runner in front of me fell to the ground in a heap. It was as if time had stopped for the runner and me. The opponent behind me sped passed us, the crowd still cheered and the rain beat down harder.
A flash of lightning lit the scene before me. For a brief moment I saw the runner in perfect light. It was a girl with the same color jersey as me: blue with white stripes. But there was another color to her jersey. By her shoulder blades the fabric was soaked through with blood as well as with rain. It dripped down the back of her shirt.
After the lightning, everything seemed to move in fast forward. I clearly wasn't the only one to notice the blood because a collective gasp came from the crowd and the other runners stopped in their tracks. Medics came to the track and carried the girl away to the sidelines. An ambulance was called and the remaining runners finished their race. Soon the track meet was over and I was suddenly standing in a hot shower in the boys locker room in a daze.
