26. More Than That

Start from the beginning

"I'm so sorry, my love. Please, forgive me." He mumbles apologetically, hitting her was something he hated with a burning passion.

Thor's lightning hits the Aether and an explosion follows, a red-white storm circles around them. Burying Aurora's head into his chest, Loki protects her from the storm and darkness, the noise is deafening. Just when the dust seems to sink to the ground, he dares to look up with Aurora and Jane.

The three of them witness with Thor how an ocean of crimson shards is floating aesthetically in the air, collecting itself to merge together. The Infinity Stone is not destroyed, no. It repairs itself to return to a body and this time, it is Malekith. The red mass is consumed and absorbed by him while his painful cry echoes through the air, the force taking over him.

"Fuck." Aurora mumbles with wide eyes, realizing that they failed. Malekith's eyes become dark and the surging power opens up the next door to the destruction of the world for him. Turning around, the Dark Elf leaves the four with his soldiers, no longer caring about them.

Aurora is the first one to get up, angrily shooting at one of the Dark Elves and supporting Thor who already swings his hammer. Pressing a button behind her ear, the space helmet appears and covers Aurora's whole face, her blue eyes hidden behind red glasses.

The Algrim notices the girl's technological advantage and grimly throws a vortex weapon towards Loki and Jane. The fallen prince catches the sight of the orange beeping device coming towards them and he doesn't hesitate to push Jane away before it explodes. A bright light blows up, Aurora turns around and sees how a black hole sucks everything surrounding it into it- including Loki.

Her heart skips a beat and suddenly, panic and fear overwhelm her. Tears dwell in her eyes and her whole body is shaking, the oxygen is stuck in her lungs. Aurora has never felt such an incredible pain as she imagines how he would disappear in this singularity, forever gone. Never able to see his mischievous grin again or hear his sarcastic comments. Never feeling his hand on hers again or being engulfed in his arms.

"LOKI!" Without wasting another second, Aurora flies with her jet boots towards Loki's floating body that is dangerously close to the sucking hole. Grabbing him by his waist, the auburn-haired girl pulls him out and they race through the air, landing with a loud thud roughly on the ground.

The gravity head vanishes into thin air and Loki gasps, looking at the masked Aurora next to him. His emerald eyes widen at her action, not believing what she just did. The girl risked her life for him.

"What did you- "

"You fucking idiot!!!" Aurora yells as she sits up, deactivating her space helmet, causing it to disappear into the implant behind her ear. Raising her fists, she slams them blindly against his chest. "Why did you do that?! Why did you just have to be so dumb and forget your own life?!"

"I just saved Jane!" Loki defends himself and catches Aurora's fists, admitting that her blows indeed hurt.

"Don't ever do such a stupid, reckless thing again or I'll kill you myself!" Her voice lowers and she tries to catch her breath, slowly cracking as her hands sink. "I thought I would- I'd never see you again... I thought I'd lose you... "

This is not what friendship feels like. This is chaos, a storm of emotions. Both realize that as they stare at each other, aware of the meaning of Aurora's words. I can't lose him... I can't even picture it. Gosh, how stupid was I to think that he was only a good friend?

"You won't." Loki promises with a soft voice, his promise lingering in the air. The fallen prince knows now's not the time and stands up, pulling Aurora along with him. Malekith's ship is flying off, slowly cloaking itself in the dark sky while a few Dark Elves are left in order to kill them.

Jane is at least safe but still weak and Thor is fighting against the Algrim, which means only Aurora is by his side to fight against the four enemies. Usually, Loki would doubt the odds but as soon as he spots the determination in Aurora's eyes, he knows they will survive this.

"I need some good music first." The auburn-haired girl decides and takes out her iPod as the opponents approach them. The melody of Another One Bites the Dust sounds in her headphones, a grin appearing on her lips now. With her space helmet back on and the gun in her hand, she is ready. "Shall we?"

"After you." Loki's grip around the dagger tightens and they stand back to back, trusting each other.

Aurora fires first, the shots electrify the Dark Elf on her right while Loki's dagger runs into the enemy's neck after he blocks a blow. Together, the couple fights against the ancient creatures, their moves swift and elegant. It's like both of them combat as one, excluding Aurora's foot tapping to the rhythm on the ground.

She notices soon how Loki doesn't fight as determined as before and sees how his eyes are worriedly attached to Thor. His brother is about to lose the fight against the monster, getting beaten up terribly.

"Go, help him." Her order surprises Loki and before he can oppose her idea, she cuts him off. "I can handle the last two, hurry now before Thor dies!"

"Be careful." Loki gives unwillingly in and runs off, hating to leave her behind, unprotected and alone. But he's also fully aware that Aurora is an independent woman who can defend herself, the God of Mischief has faith in her skills. When his figure is nothing more than a line in the distance, Aurora turns around, continuing the fight against the Dark Elves.

They are obviously stronger than her and skilled fighters but not faster, which is their disadvantage. As usual, Aurora jumps around to dodge every blade and punch, almost enjoying the little game. Yet, when the song is over and suddenly silence arises from Thor and Loki's side, she turns around to check on both.

The raven-haired man is about to drive a sword through the Algrim, to avenge his mother and Aurora is solemnly focused on his crave for revenge in this movement. He is certainly flawed but the auburn-haired girl cannot help but care about him, about the good in him. Her distraction leads to the Dark Elf's opportunity of an attack and suddenly, she feels how a blade cuts into her skin.

A yelp of pain escapes her lips and she glances down at the deep cut on the side of her stomach, blood already soaking through her shirt. Gritting her teeth, she hisses at the awful burning and lifts her gun, shooting without hesitation at both warriors as they are knocked out on the ground.

"Assholes." Aurora swears and groans in pain, her hand pressed against the wound. She quickly hides the injury beneath her jacket, wanting to prevent Loki's discovery of it, knowing he would yell at her. Usually, she never gets hit, being too fast for her opponent but somehow Loki seems to be distracting enough to rob her of her attention.

Rubbing off the crimson color on her black pants, she hides all the evidence and looks up, her eyes widen at the impaled Algrim. Instead of being defeated, the monster turns around to Loki and raises his hands.

"Loki!"

And now the girl races as fast as possible to the most important person in her life.
