How many of you can say that you live the best life ever? That you have the best parents ever?
I never knew either of my parents. They had abandoned me, left me for dead. I was found, and put in a foster home.
They hated me.
They treated me terribly and there was nothing I could do. My one joy was school, the one place I could get out of the hell that was supposed to be home.
School soon lost its touch.
I was smart. Not just, oh I know that, smart, but, I am three grades ahead, and learning several languages , smart.
But I didn't like that. I just wanted to fit in, blend in with the crowd.
I had no friends, except one kid. He had dropped into the school halfway through the year.
I was assigned to show him around, and tutor him if need be. I had ADHD, and so did he.
We talked, and we became friends. Sorta.
Nico didn't like to talk much, so I decided to do something completely shocking.
I didn't talk much. Whenever we saw each other, I'd keep my words to a minimum, so as not to annoy him.
It worked pretty well, and he began to talk more.
I felt as if I'd finally began to fit in.
Well, a demon lady ruined everything.
"Nico!" I shouted.
She had me cornered against the lockers, and I was scared.
She hissed at me, her tongue spraying saliva everywhere.
"Watch out!" I heard Nico shout.
I braced myself, and then I felt something like dust blow onto me.
"Ew..." I muttered.
Nico chucked and smiled.
Wait a minute.
Nico smiled!
I was shocked. Nico almost never smiles, unless we're in mythology class.
He helped me up, and led me outside. We stood in the shadows of a nearby oak tree.
"Nico? What are you doing?" I asked.
Without warning, he grabbed me, and we fell. Except, we kept falling. I felt cold, and it was dark. I started to be really scared.
What if I never saw daylight again?
And then we popped out under a tree in a completely different place, and Nico passed out.

After being given the tour of Camp, I went to the infirmary to check on Nico. He was on his way out. I walked up.
"Hi."
"Hi."
We stood there for a moment.
Nico grabbed my hand and started to lead me somewhere.
I decided to trust him. He did save my life, did he not?
Nico took me to a grey cabin, full of books and blueprints. The kids in there all had blonde hair and serious grey eyes.
I felt awkward. I looked different than the rest of them.
"Annabeth!" Nico called.
A girl came to the door, and looked me up and down.
"Newbie?" She asked.
"Yeah, but I strongly suspect she's a daughter of Athena." He turned toward me.
"You've already had the tour of Camp, right?" He asked. I nodded.
"I'll see you at dinner," he said before walking off to a cabin. It looked like the one for Hades.
"He's the son of Hades," I whispered.
Annabeth nodded. "Come on in. If Nico says you're a child of Athena, you probably are."
Annabeth gave me a bunk, explained the gods a little better than my tour guide, Will Solace, did.
At dinner, I found out it was customary to sit at the table according to your godly parent.
I normally always follow the rules, but this time I didn't. I went over and sat by Nico.
Some people stopped talking to stare, some just glanced our way, but I didn't particularly care. I was sitting with a friend, and that's what mattered.
Camp wasn't crowded, since it was the school year, but schools would be letting out for the summer soon, so maybe I'd make more friends.
Nico and I chatted a little, but when we did talk, it was focused on why I had to be here.
"So, I have to be here basically to stay alive." I concluded. Nico nodded. "So then why are shirts bright orange? Does Chiron want the monsters to see us?"
Nico thought for a moment.
"Possibly monsters are colorblind. And that way, if a camper is in danger, he or she can be spotted easily. May be that's why."
I thought about it.
"Well, I guess that's as good of an answer I'm going to get."
After dinner, there was a campfire, but I wasn't feeling up to it, and nor was Nico. We headed back toward the cabins.
"Goodnight, Nico." I said.
He smiled.
"I love you." He briefly kissed me.
"Sweet dreams."
"Ma Nico mio caro, ti amo." I replied.
After another brief kiss, we parted ways.
Campers were wrong, Nico wasn't a rude, goth guy. He just needed someone to be there for him.
