The Nutcracker

As the bus rolls to a stop around the corner from the theater, I pull my earbuds out. I notice that the noise of the other students is louder than my music, and a couple of them are yelling my name. "Marie!" I turn and smile at them as one of them shoves their phone in my face showing me this video about a kid sliding on ice on his way out of school. I just smile at it and stand to get out of my seat as we start to get off of the bus. Our teachers hand us a ticket as we step off of the bus, and I walk towards my friends who are gawking at the dogs over in the dog park. I smile and point to one of the dogs that's trying to dig his way out of the park. Same buddy, I think to myself as we start across the street.

As we walk inside I show the nice old lady my ticket, and as she scans it and motions me along I try to keep up with Savannah and Riley as they head towards the gift shop. We're here to see the "Nutcracker" I was here the previous year and saw the play with my family so it wasn't as exciting as the first time. I put my earbuds back in and lean against the wall waiting as my friends look around the gift shop. Our school group are the first to arrive surprisingly. So as the group headed up to our seats I stayed back to wait on my friends.

Just as my friends come out of the gift shop, a boy comes out of the men's bathroom which is situated next to the small shop, he looks over at me and stops in his tracks, I just glance at him as I start with my friends up the steps. I furrowing my brows I look back to see the boy still watching me, at his side I notice another man who is talking to him but looking at something else on his phone. Turning back around and pulling my earbuds out I shut my music off.

"Marie." I smile leaning into Savannah's phone. "I'm putting that on my story," she says.

"Send it to me," I say and she clicks my name. I open my snap chat and take a screenshot of the picture. Just then the doors open and in comes a crowd of people filling in to find their seats. We were in one of the balcony views on the third floor, so we have a pretty good view of the people below us.

Just as the show starts I feel as if I'm being watched, so excusing myself I get up and head to the bathroom. I splash some water on my face and look into the mirror. Grabbing one of the towels I wipe my face. Heading out of the bathroom I glance at my phone I have one missed call from Kory, who was really starting to get on my nerves.

I hit the call back and put the phone to my ear walking out of the bathroom, "Hey what's up?"

"You tell me." I walk into the hall and toss my purse on to the ground by the wall. "You need to stop calling me."

"I know-"

"You know and yet you keep calling," I say looking at my watch.

"Please Marie, just let me show you how sorry I am." I shake my head and then realize that he can't see me.

"No." I glance up to see that boy again, but this time he's walking towards me. "I'm sorry, I have to go." I hang up even though I can hear his pleas for me not to. Picking up my purse I watch as the boy stops in front of me, he looks down at me and doesn't say anything.

Looking up into his golden eyes I ask, "Can I help you?"

"You need to leave." He says in a deep voice.

"Excuse me."

"You need to get out of here before it's too late." Shaking my head I step back.

"I'm sorry, but I'm not leaving. My friends are here." I start past him when he pulls my arm back.

I look into his eyes frightened, "You need to leave." His pupils seem to do something weird as I yank my arm out of his.

As I look up at him I slap him in the face, "Who the hell do you think you are? Don't ever touch me again." I turn and start quickly back up the steps.

Sitting back in my seat Savannah leans over and whispers in my ear, "What took you so long?"

I just shake my head, "Kory. He won't stop calling."

She frowns and looks back to the play, as I grab my arm I notice how sore it is, and wince in pain. Wow, that guy was something else, I mean who does he think he is talking to me like that. I don't even know him. I watch the play and notice that they were at the part where the girl was just getting her nutcracker. As I hear a pop everyone jumps only to notice that it was just the play, but once we hear the pop three more times people start to panic. I look around and see people running to the doors as Savannah and Riley stand up I follow and we look over the balcony.

"Girls, we need to go now." We all turn to see one of our teachers, Mrs. Bentley at the door. We start for her when there was another shot. I grunt out in pain but still keep going following my friends and teacher. As we start down the steps my vision starts to fade, people are screaming and pushing past me as we get to the second flight of stairs I'm shoved down where I hit my head on the railing. Groaning I roll to my side, trying to keep the pressure on my side where I got shot I push myself up and look to see that all the people are gone. I slowly stand up and start walking down the steps trying to get to the bottom and outside. There's another shot behind me and I feel hot tears running down my face as I start picking up the pace, trying to hurry and get outside to my friends, but when I heat another shot and I lose my grip on the railing. I fall and hit my head on the floor.

"Stop, don't hurt her." I slowly turn my head to see a blurry image of someone running down the steps or were they walking. I can't tell anymore I feel my head slowly being lifted off of the ground but that was it. All I remember is the blackness that envelopes me.
