The bus ride to school is a long boring one. It included me playing Twisty Road and Run Sausage Run on my phone the whole ride there. The bus finally comes to a stop and the bus driver tells us to get out. I grab my backpack, mumble a thank you to the driver, and carefully walk down the bus steps. I take a deep breath as I walk into the school. There are people walking into rooms and running down the halls. Some students are standing in front of lockers having a conversation before the first class of the day. I walk down the hallway towards my locker. Our school colors are green and gray, and our mascot is the boar. All the lockers are grass green and the floor has tan tile. I put my books in my locker that I didn't need for my first class, which is AP History. As I started to walk down the hall, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned my head to the left, and I saw nothing. Then I turned my head to the right and jumped. "Hey, Sky. How are you?" asks my best friend Summer.
"God Summer, you scared the crap outta me," I replied taking a deep breath.
"I saw on opportunity and took it," she said with a smile.
"Yeah. To scare me half to death," I say with my eyebrows raised.
"So, anything new happen last night?" she asks ignoring my comment.
"Why do you ask me this every morning? Even on the weekends. It's not like Zac Efron is going to appear on my doorstep," I respond.
"I'm just trying to create conversation, geez. Is it a bad thing to want to interact with my best friend?" she asks giving my the guilt trip.
"No, I guess not. I guess something happened..." I trail, not really knowing if it's monumental. Something is always monumental with Summer though.
"Oh. Oh. Spill," she says as her eyes become wider than usual.
"Umm... My mom thinks I need a tutor to ensure my grades will help me get into the school," I whisper only low enough for her to hear. I don't want to get a lot of attention about my application to Manhattan Music School. If I don't get in, I don't want everyone to know. I wouldn't be able to take the humiliation. Summer knows that it's a secret not to be shared, she pinky promised.
"Well, I agree," she says. "If you really want to get in, then you should make it so they can't say no." My mouth is wide open. How come I didn't think of that, I think.
"It sounds better coming from you than my mom," I say. "Maybe it won't be so bad. It just depends on who my tutor is."
"Well, tell me all about it when you get home. I got to go to class," she says with a quick wave before parting through the crowded hallway. I take a deep breath and walk to my first class. Great, I think as I walk through the door, now I have to fight off sleep in the middle of class. I walk to my seat and sink down in my chair. I look around at my classmates. To my right is Stephanie, the popular girl, talking to her minions, I mean her best friends, Emma and Katy. Stephanie has light blonde curly hair and bright blue eyes filled with hatred as she catches me looking at her. I quickly turn away and find my shoes interesting. I flip my book to the lesson we are going to learn today. As I'm flipping through my book, Dillian, who sits next to me, says,"Don't worry about her."
"I'm just wondering what I did to her to make her hate me so bad," I say turning to look at him. His blonde hair is blocking his pretty blue eyes. He looks cute to any other girl who, but we have been best friends for 10 years. He fits in my family so well, it's hilarious. Everyone treats him like a brother, even though he looks nothing like us. Summer, Dillian, and I hang out constantly and don't spend a minute alone, besides living in different houses.
"You didn't do anything besides date her 'precious' boyfriend, Taylor. What kind of name is that for a boy anyway?" he says curving his fingers into quotes.
"I actually like that name, but thanks for trying to talk bad about him for me. I don't even know how she found out about that. It was over the summer anyways," I say matter-of-a-factly. Yes, it's true I had my first boyfriend who ended up being a huge jerkface. It was just a 3 month relationship that barely lasted. I saw him at the beach, and he came up to talk to me. We ended up hitting it off after about 20 minutes of normal conversation. One thing lead to another, and we started dating. He was always so sweet and a gentleman. Never tried to do anything I wasn't comfortable with. But I was wrong. He ended up being a jerk, but I hate to talk about it.
"She is crazy. Didn't I tell you about how she followed me around the mall one time just to ask me if I was single. No way would I ever date, much less touch her. She is the center for drama," he said trying to make me feel better. Everything he said was true. She is a crazy, snobby, super duper butt-loaded rich, nut-job. Maybe that's only my opinion, but the fact about her being rich is 100% true. Her house alone has 2 pools, a ballroom, and 5 spare rooms. She has the newest styles for clothing, while all I get are stretched-out hand-me-downs. She's the only child, so that means no hand-me-downs for her. Her car is a brand-new Mustang, and she got a chihuahua. We have 10 people in our family, so we aren't poor, but we are nowhere close to rich. I snap out of my thoughts as our teacher walks into the room, so everyone goes to their desks.
"Ok, today we are going to be learning about the Battle of Gettysburg," says Mr. Moyer. A groan erupts around the class. He carries on as if he didn't hear it, but I heard him mumble,"Teenagers, they will never understand." After a very long 45 minutes, I walked out of the classroom only to be stopped by Summer.
"Guess what?" she shouts in my ear.
"What?" I asked rubbing the outside of my ear.
"I found out who your tutor is," she says all giddy.
"Well who?" I ask suddenly getting eager.
"Brett Wilson."
