How many rabbits should you have, one or two together ?
Rabbit's are individuals some rabbit don't like other rabbits but most enjoy having a friend that can spend time and play with.
Rabbits are quiet animals but they speak and communicate with it's body, which we humans can't understand all the time. For example I know when I have done something wrong to my rabbit, he will ignore me until he forgive me and let me come close again but it's a lot I miss but other rabbits would understand.
A rabbit can feel alone and sad when it don't get attention and love.
In the wild rabbits live in colonies, they have own territory but are a herd animal. They play together and groom each other.
Owning one rabbit:
Myself my rabbit it's alone, he don't have a friend bunny but he's happy.
If you only own one rabbit you need to spend a lot of time with your rabbit, when your rabbit want love from you it will come and show it. For example the rabbit want to be pet, sleep close to you, play or just groom you. The rabbit will show.
If you have an outdoor rabbit or indoor rabbit you don't spend time with it will feel lonely and become sad.
When you have an outdoor rabbit, you should spend as much time you can with your bunny. Let the bunny come in to the house during the summer and spring, go out on a walk, sit in a encloser and just socialize. The more time you spend with your rabbit the sooner they become tamed.
If you are going to just have one rabbit it's best to have a buck (male rabbit). They have a calmer temper than doe (female rabbit). That's because females have a strong mother instinct and during the times of heat( ready to be breed) they can get grumpy and angry. A little like when some females are on their periods, I'm one of them.
Owning two rabbits:
Two bucks can't be together, often when they become sexually mature they will start to fight over the territory and trying to castrate each other, it can go really bad and bloody. But some bucks work but that's really small.
Two doe often works, specially if they are sisters. They can become really close friends and be truly happy. But it can happen one of the doe it's extremely dominant and can start to make the other rabbit be at it's mercy. The dominant doe will take the food and the other rabbit will have to take the scraps. The dominant rabbit will take the biggest space while the other rabbit will have to sit in a corner. When they come to the heat period, they will start to fight and decide the rank between each other and it will calm down to the next heat and it all start over again.
Owning one doe and a buck it's the best terms but you will need to castrate the buck so you don't get kit (rabbit babies). A rabbit can mate many times during one year and can fast become two to too many. A castrated buck often don't get mad when the doe it's in heat and she start to ride him and become grumpy. Some rabbits get sexually mature around 3 months, so even if you thinks they are babies they can start to breed. So when they reach that age you will need to separate the rabbits until you can castrate the buck which often works around 6 months old.
