“You ripped my heart out of my chest. I love you more than anything, but you love her instead. You made me happy for the first time in my life, then ripped it away. Do you think I’m okay?”

My best friend sighed, resting his chin on one hand as he stared dreamily at Natalie Ericson, his crush of two months.

“Travers,” I hissed, lowering my spoonful of soup.

“Hmmmmmm?” he asked, smiling dopily at me. His warm, hazel eyes met mine - the eyes of the person I'd known and liked for so long. My heart clenched.

“Never mind…” I muttered. I shoveled more soup into my mouth, trying to ignore the grating feeling in my chest. I knew he was too whipped to care.

The sound of heels clicking towards us made me turn away, biting my lip. Natalie, the transfer student from Yorkshire, waggled her fingers at us, flashing a toothpaste-commercial smile.

"Hey, guys," she chirped, sitting in-between me and Travers. She was practically squishing me off the bench, her short skirt hiked too high on her thighs.

"Hey Natalie," Travers managed, smiling widely as he gave her an overly appreciative look. I thought I saw his eyes flash to me, but I just stared into my soup thermos.

"Ay, Trav!" a voice called from the other side of the room. My head jerked up. Who was that?

"Reece! Long time no see," Travers shouted, waving him over.

A guy our age made his way towards us, two lunch trays balanced on one of his arms. He wore a fitted navy-blue v-neck, paired with light-wash skinny jeans that clung to him perfectly, shaping his strong yet slim build in a way that couldn't be healthy for a girls' ovaries. His tousled black hair contrasted nicely with his light skin, and he walked with sure, confident steps.

I disliked him immediately.

His crystal-blue eyes cut right through me, ignoring Travers and Natalie as if he was searching for something inside of me. Satisfied, he flashed me a blinding smile, sliding onto the bench directly across from mine.

"Who's the pretty lady?" he asked Travers, his eyes never leaving my face. I shifted uncomfortably, burning holes through the cafeteria table.

My best friend cleared his throat awkwardly. "Uh, this is Alexia," he said, his eyes flickering from me to Reece. "My best friend."

Reece nodded thoughtfully, sliding one of the lunch trays towards me as he took a big bite from his salad. I could see Travers tense up. "Best friends," he repeated. Reece nodded again, disguising a laugh with a loud cough.

"Since birth," Travers added unnecessarily. I had to fight back the urge to roll my eyes. Even when he was all ga-ga over some other girl, he still acted overprotective.

"I have a lunch, thanks," I piped up, noticing one of Reece's trays of food in front of me. Reece shrugged, taking a swig from his water bottle. "I just thought we'd get to know each other, seeing as I'm going to be the one driving you home today," he said goodnaturedly.

I nearly spewed soup all over him. "What?" I spluttered, looking from him to my supposed 'best friend.' Travers' mouth dropped open, equally surprised. "You? I thought Stacy was picking her up," he said, a panicked expression on his face.

Stacy was our other friend. We'd met a few months ago, at the beginning of our senior year. "Are you Stacy's brother?" Natalie asked out of the blue, batting her lashes at Reece.
