"i called to check on you," sehyoon's voice echoed through the phone into byeongkwan's ear, the sweet calming voice byeongkwan loved hearing all the time. "are you okay?"

byeongkwan's gaze shifts from his bed to the floor, where his feet stand. something tells him he should tell the truth, but an unsettling feeling in him says he shouldn't.

why tangle sehyoon into the mess he's created? make it worse for him and sehyoon? even threaten sehyoon in some way, like his life. changkyun's very violent, and just because byeongkwan had pushed him out, doesn't mean the brunet will stand down.

but sehyoon's too deep in this problem already.

"no." byeongkwan bluntly answers. his throat feels dry, and his stomach twists into a knot when he hears sehyoon sigh from the other end.

"are you still feeling depressed from yesterday?"

"n-no, it's not that," byeongkwan responses, hesitantly.

"then what's wrong?"

byeongkwan swallows, hard. his throat is tight, and it's hard to breathe. the room feels like it's starting to spin. it sets byeongkwan off balance, causing him to stumble backwards and collapse to the ground.

his phone hits the floor harshly, a loud thump emits from the collision. sehyoon's worried cries can be heard from the device, but his words are inaudible to byeongkwan's ears.

byeongkwan lays there, motionlessly. his chest rises and falls slowly.

"byeongkwan? byeongkwan!" byeongkwan can hear sehyoon on the phone, but he feels too weak to answer. he just lays there, painfully.

sehyoon finally ends the line, the faint beeping coming from the phone. byeongkwan is left there with more silence.

the silence was capricious. it was abnormal to hear such a thing. nothing. he hadn't been able to enjoy such silence in so long.

a sob escapes his lips, tears welling up in his eyes. his arms fly to cover his face and soak up his tears, but there are too many for him to catch.

they roll down his cheeks, falling softly onto the carpet. his sobs turn to bawling, as he just lays there. crying, in pain, and now, alone.

a scream erupts from his throat, his body luring in pain. he sobs loudly, probably provoking the neighbours, but he didn't care. he didn't care anymore, he didn't care about anything, nothing at all.

nothing.

///

sehyoon's feet stomp against the pavement as he runs, his breath heaving and his body wearing out on itself so quickly.

his cheeks turn bright red, the cold winter air hitting him in the face. his hands felt numb, and his jacket wasn't doing much to keep him warm. his scarf flies behind him, one hand trying to hold it in place so it doesn't soar away from his neck.

sirens shrill in sehyoon's ears, as the sound of them rush up from behind him on the street, flying past him ahead of the road. seeing the ambulance makes sehyoon halt to his feet. he shakes his head, his heart pounding inside of his chest.

"no," he whispers, his warm breath like a puff of smoke in the cold air. "no... no.."

tears slide down his cheeks, goosebumps raising on his skin. his feet start to pick up again, his body forcing him to sprint.

he bolts down the sidewalk, at the fastest speed he can bare. he doesn't stop, his feet now painfully colliding with the hard pavement.

"no!" he yells, tearing pouring down his cheeks onto his scarf, the warm fabric soaking them up quickly. "no! byeongkwan!"

he didn't want to believe that ambulance was called for byeongkwan, but that's a slim chance.

when sehyoon sees the flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance inside the parking lot of the apartment building byeongkwan lived, his heart dropped to his feet. it was like time stopped, as he watches paramedics roll byeongkwan's limp body on a stretch into the white truck. people from the apartment only watch in fear, a few crying.

"n-no..." sehyoon whispers one last time.

sehyoon sobs painfully, unable to watch the ambulance shut the doors of the truck and zoom off, away from the apartment complex with byeongkwan.

he runs toward the huddle of people, muttering softly under their breath. sehyoon pushes past all of them into the apartment complex, running up the staircase leading to byeongkwan's flat.

he pushes the door open, the room unlocked. he's horrified to see bright red blood spots on the floor, and the kitchen a mess.

the thought of byeongkwan harming himself runs through his mind, making sehyoon cry harder. he bites his lower lip hard, the tasting of blood in his mouth.

he walks around the house, shaking, scared and alone. blood covers the kitchen tiles, and trails around the front door, living room and hall leading to the shared bedroom of changkyun and byeongkwan. he follows the red trail, wiping away tears.

when sehyoon stands in the doorway, he sees byeongkwan's black phone, on the floor, bloody fingerprints on the front of it.

sehyoon doesn't hesitate to pick the phone up and turn it on. he slides to unlock the device, no password required.

the phone has his contact's page open, multiple contacts filed in his phone. sehyoon scrolls until he reaches the number he needed.

he presses the contact, opening the contact's information page. he presses the small green phone button near the top, and the phone dials him into a call.

he holds the bloodied phone to his ear, and waits for the other line to pick up. his breathing heaves when they do.

"hello?"

"i need you at the hospital right now."

"sehyoon?"

"yes, come by kwan's apartment and pick me up. the ambulance just took him away."

"are you crying?"

"that's not important right now-"

"sehyoon, are you crying?"

sehyoon bites his lip, tears still flowing from his eyes. he sighs longingly.

"y-yes, i'm crying junhee," sehyoon sighs. "i'm just scared."

sehyoon can hear junhee sigh from the other end. there's a long silence between the two lines.

"i'll be there in a moment."

the call is ended.
