Chapter 9: Years of Mourning- I asked,

"Why was it the best thing to do?"

Drake shook his head,

"Not now."

I grabbed his shoulders desperately,

"I have to know."

Drake glanced at Faith who was fast asleep,

"Truth is I didn't save the bite."

Emotions bursted out of me. Anger, depression, and curiosity. I stuttered,

"What?"

Drake spoke evenly,

"I didn't have to."

I asked,

"What do you mean?"

He replied,

"I cleaned the bite. She was already vampire. Her mother was human but her father wasn't."

I asked,

"How's that possible?"

Drake shook his head,

"I don't know."

I shrugged,

"So who's the father?"

He hesitated,

"Me."

I gasped,

"What?"

He repeated,

"I'm the father."

I stared him in the eyes,

"You screwed around with that woman?"

Drake nodded,

"It was during transformation. I had no clue."

I glanced at Faith,

"If your the father then why don't you want her? Why don't you love her?"

He looked down at the floor,

"Because I didn't love her mother."

I glared at him,

"That's cruel."

He shrugged. I shoved him as I walked over to Faith who was slowly waking up. I shook her fully awake,

"Good morning sweetie."

She wrapped her arms around my neck and smiled,

"Mommy!"

I continued talking to Drake as I helped Faith into her clothes,

"So you slept with a women you didn't even know?"

He shrugged,

"What? I couldn't help it. She had ti..."

I slapped him,

"Faith is awake!"

He smirked,

"Oops."

I glared at him and he turned serious. I asked,

"When am I leaving?"

Faith stared at me with curious blue eyes causing my heart to shred as if it was in the middle of a war. Drake replied,

"In the morning."

I nodded and crouched down to Faith's height. I hugged her and kissed her forehead,

"Mommy is going to be gone for a little bit. I will visit you."

Faith didn't say anything smoothing the jagged ice beneath my feet. Maybe she didn't understand but I did.

I laid on the mattress with Faith curled in my arms. Drake shook me awake gently,

"Goodbye, Collin."

I shook my head,

"I'm not coming back. Am I?"

He shook his head,

"No. I'm sorry."

Suddenly I hugged him,

"Goodbye, Drake Deacon."

He smiled,

"Dramatic, are we?"

I smiled and kissed him on the cheek. Tears rolled down my cheek as I shut the cabin door and ran as far away as I could.

My legs dragged in the grass as I convinced my self to not look back. I had to get to Annett but leave my daughter? She explained it nice and clear I wasn't worth a single coin to her but I knew she loved me. She had to. I love her. I mean-my thoughts broke away as I heard screaming. I listened carefully and walked toward the shouting. I heard rushing water as I ran through the trees. The screaming didn't die down not a single bit. A river came into view. Drake stood by the edge with Faith. He held her above the water and tried to muffle her screaming. What the hell is he doing? She can't swim. I lunged forward as his hand slipped from her waist dropping her into the fast water. The water looked like a slithering blue snake striking it's prey as it covered Faith. Faith waved her arms above the water. I was too scared and shocked to run, to help her. Her eyes met mine just before she gave up and let the dangerous water pull her away and under. I gasped and screamed. Drake turned around surprised to see me. I ran toward the water reaching into the depths. I didn't stop screaming. When I convinced myself that she was really gone I walked away from the water toward Drake. He stood still cautious of me. I lunged forward onto his chest. I slammed my fists into his chest like a gorilla. He didn't move. I could have knocked him out but my feelings were too strong. My strength died as I got tired. I finally gave up and collapsed into his arms. Tears streaked my face. Drake kissed my forehead and wrapped his arms around me. I wiped my face and shoved him out of the way. I glared at Drake,

"Why?"

He stayed quiet. I shouted in is face,

"WHY?"

Drake looked me in the eyes whispering,

"Chao."

I threw my arms in the air in frustration,

"What? From what I saw that was you! Not anyone else but Drake Deacon."

Drake shook his head,

"I know. Chao sent me."

I looked away weakly,

"Chao sent you to kill Faith?"

He nodded,

"Yes."

I gulped,

"Why would you listen?"

Drake shook his head as if to clear the guilt,

"I don't know."

I slowly walked away sulking in my footsteps. Faith was gone. My precious little girl is gone.
