Hi, today I will tell you the story about the course of Halloween. Take your time and listen!
We lived in a world where everyone had everything. And if someone didn't they pretended they did on the internet. Online everybody's life seemed to be perfekt and full of joy and happyness. Offline most of us didn't even have a life.
Kindness just existed in chatrooms and virtual worlds. No not even there. But real life was the worst. Our beautiful world was conquered by selfish individuals how didn’t even dream about helping others. Their faces were full of makeup and as fake as they could be. Everything you saw were makeup faces with a huge fake smile on the lips. And everything that counted was the latest Instagram picture and the Facebook relationship status. In this huge fake world I met this guy. Probably as fake as he could be and my little naive brain didn't want to see it.
Kingsstreet 43, London. January 22nd. Janis Home party. My first home party I have ever been to. Ever. And probably my last one. But just probably, there was this tiny chance that I would not get drunk and cry the whole day and instead meet a guy. Not that I had ever been drunk or that I ever met a guy. I'm just saying. I'm not prude or anything. I talked to loads of people in my life and some of them even were male. This sounds miserable. I'm actually really happy and satisfied with my life. It's just the humans. They are fake. With fake I mean that they pretend. Humans pretend, a lot. They pretend to be rich, to be famous, to be happy, to have friends. Not that I would care. Not anymore. I did. But not anymore. They just want to show of, to present themselves. Guys wear shirts to show of their muscles, so they don't wear any shirt at all. Girls wear dresses short enough to show of their butt and boobs. So barely anything.
And when you talk to them they have two intrests. For one themselves and their glorious past or just sex. I'm so drifting of.
Sorry. Back to London. January 22nd.
I was at a homeparty. Disregarding the bunch of fake friends I arrived with, I was alone. "Nelly?" Deep voice. Unknown deep voice. Right beside me. The first word I heard at that party. Beside Janis way to excited 'Hiiiii' when we arrived. Someone said my name. Yes this was exciting. And yes it doesn't happen often. Nowadays people don't talk, they text.
I turned around. He was huge. He didn't look familiar. I just wondered how he knew my name when we didn't met before.Did I already mention that he was huge?
He was perfect. As perfect as everybody else. And if he wasn't he pretended. His dark hair was cut short but not too short. Quite perfect. His teeth were perfectly white and straight. And his shirt existed. He smiled. Why did he smile? We live in a grumpy world. "Sorry I am Josh" he shook my hand. I stared. "Do I know you?" My thoughts came out loud.
"I read your article in the school paper. It was amazing. You are a fantastic writer." There actually were people who read the printed school paper? Still? In the time of social media? I was stunned. "How are you Nelly?" Pardon? I always considered this question to be extinct a while ago. Exterminated by selfish thoughts and acts. Seems like I was wrong.
Who was this Josh?
This party was my personal chance to find out.
"Hi Sweetheart." Sharp voice behind me. Ashling! Most popular and most pretty out of all of them. She grinned at me with her huge, fake toothpaste grin. "Did you already see my latest facebook post Nel? It's hilarious. You have to see it. And please don't again forget to like it. Okay. I mean I can see who liked it and you didn't. So don't disappoint me. You know sweetie I have a goal. You know most likes ever. But we talked about this before. You are the best. But Nel, like it before I post a new pic. And if you are online just comment something. 4367 comments are way less. You know business. Hahaha." Ashling and I, we pretend to be friends. This all started when I had to sign up in facebook for my science project and my school post had more liked than her gucci purse picture. Since then we are friends. And because friends support each other, I am not allowed to post pictures ever again. Not that I would bother.
"Ahhh. As I see, you already met Josh. My soon to be boyfriend." Ashling grinned, Josh frowned.
"So don't grow hopes Nel. Not that he would be interested in you if he can have me. But still, I don't want you to be disappointed later on. It's just an advice of a friend. So better stay away."
Then she was gone again. I stood there unsure what to do next. Not that I would ever listen to Ashlings selfish advices. Still, it's Ashling and she is powerful. “You and Ashling are friends? I so did not see that coming.” I didn’t say anything. Because actually I would not call her a friend but I also don’t know why this surprises Josh. “Do you want to drink something?” “I don’t drink.” I never drank alcohol in my whole entire life and for no I am not planning to change this.
Josh got me a coke and after a while we sat down on a couch. We talked a lot. A lot about things I never ever talked about before. We talked about thoughts, dreams, wishes and plans. As well as personalities. But we did not talk about social media, likes or anything about this virtual world. I don’t even know Joshs last name so I could not even add him on Facebook. Even though I consider Facebook for the worst possible way to date someone. I know I’m not dating Josh. I was just saying.
Suddenly, completely out of the blur Josh said something after a long thoughtful silence. “I’m not dating Ashling. And I never will. I generally don’t fancy fake chicks, I’m rather old fashioned in this perspective. I’m still looking for real love. I know this is hard to find in a fake world. But I believe in it. And with meeting you today I think I came a bit closer to what I am looking for. You gave me hope. Thank you Nelly.”
After that we both had enough of deep conversations und unusually long eye contact and made our way to the dancefloor, where we spent the rest of the night together. Not bothered by anyone.
And then there was this curse. At Halloween. Someone, somewhere decided sometime, somehow that this year there shouldn't be a million sexy fake bunnies and another million witches running around the streets of London. This year no one should need a Halloween costume.
Some people were confused, others scared and again others just knew it, when they looked in the mirror at the 31st of October 2083.
