Chapter 28: Say No, Alex

Instead of talking to him, the red girl cried harder. "I'm so sorry!" 

Alex squinted at her. What?

"I'll leave, sorr - " Alex started walking away.

The girl in red cast a glance over his shoulder and squeaked in fear.

"Stay!" She pleaded.

"Hey!" Alex turned back to her, a grin plastered on his face. "I like helping helpless people!"

The girl smiled sadly. "You'll - er - help me?" She seemed to be having trouble with getting her voice out. 

"If you need hel - "

"Oo - ooh, I do! Please don't leave me, I am helpless!"

Alex shrugged. "Waz going on?"

The red girl bit her lip, her eyes filling with tears once again. "My boyfriends doing me wrong... cheating me. So suddenly he's up and gone, I don't have the means to go on, emotionally."
Alex took the tears as break up sadness. "Well, talk it out with me!"

"You're too kind!" The red girl grinned.

Alex blushed, "Well I should go... "

The red girl turned redder and grabbed his face and kissed him.

Why did Alex hear say, "I'm so sorry?"

But it didn't matter. The red girl was here, and Eliza wasn't.

He'd have to apologize after the wedding.

John sighed as he finally felt his senses come back to him.

These many glasses of water definitely call for a trip to the bathroom, John thought wearily.

He stood up and walked toward where those boys had pointed Alex to.

These were not the bathrooms. Alex and a girl - Maria? - were kissing passionately against a wall.

John gasped. How could Alex do this? He immediately he realized that Alex was still drunk. But Eliza.

"Alex!" John wrenched him away from Maria, who was staring at Alex in fear.

"I'm so sorry," she muttered feebly.

"Nobody needs to know," John whispered.

"Actually," a tall man appeared from the shadows followed by a shorter one. "Everyone will know soon."

Thomas Jefferson and James Reynolds.

John glared at him. "You have no evidence!"

James laughed nastily. "There's a thing called technology."

He displayed pictures and a video of the two kissing.

"Maria, why?" John turned, stricken, to Maria.

Maria had on a complete poker face. "James is my boyfriend."

John stared at her uncomprehendingly. "We're your friends! And you hate James!"

Something flickered in Maria's eyes before vanishing. "He's my boyfriend."

Thomas smiled. "Yes! But the more pressing concern is, should we leak these pictures to you poor wife?"

"Fiancé," James corrected.

Thomas glared at him. "The point is, will you pay?"

"If you pay, you can stay with me," Maria recited, her eyes glazing over.

"He doesn't want you!" John cried, as Alex shook his head mutely. "He won't pay either!"

"You have until tomorrow," Thomas smirked.

What the heck did I get myself into?

The bachelor night was over. Ruined. Alex and John were sitting immobile in their room.

"I don't have the money, John," Alex whispered, his eyes glazed.

"I need to tell her anyways, I can't keep this from Eliza," Alex added, shaking his head.

John clenched his fists and started to punch a pillow.

"I hate myself, John! How could I?" Alex asked.

John finally spoke. "Let him do it."

Alex gasped. "But - "

"We have to, Alex. Eliza deserves to know."

Alex fell back in his bed.

"I hate myself."
