Daniel Howell wasn't normal. He wasn't like the 99% of the world who had engravings in their wrists. Instead, Dan had a blanket of skin wrapped around his wrist. Showing no engraving at all. At birth, every child is born with a marking. Sometime that will tell your mood. But Dan didn't have one. His wrist wasn't glimmering and sparkling like every other child's. No, his was bare. Showing nothing at all. Dan became that 1% in the world that didn't have a marking. Which is incredibly rare in this world.
Confusion spread through Dan's family. Without his mark, his parents had to guess his emotions. Never being able to tell what he was truly feeling. Making their job ten times harder than before. Without this mark, they couldn't tell if Dan even had a soul. Which of course he did, but his parents didn't know that. His parents thought he was a freak of nature. Something that didn't belong. Dan's parents still were going to raise him to grow up to be a perfect boy. Even if he had this small flaw to him. His parents still wanted the best for him.
Phillip Lester was born with a mark. He was like the other 99% of the world. Except his didn't glow to show his mood. In fact, his doesn't work at all. All it shows is a pitch black color that never leaves. Phil's parents don't blame him. They blame themselves for being so careless while Phil was still in the womb. His mother blames herself mostly, for falling down in the house one day causing her to go into early labor. Luckily her husband was there and managed to get to the hospital before anything really bad happened. The umbilical cord wrapped itself around Phil's left wrist cutting off circulation. Luckily, the doctors managed to save his hand in time after his mother gave birth to him.
When he was born his mark worked like any other. It glowed a bright yellow constantly. Only changing for brief moments. As a couple days passed his mark started to fade. The bright yellow slowly dimming down. Turning into a deep yellow that soon turned darker and darker. Phil was still happy, his mark just didn't show it. The doctors ran test after test. But nothing showed what was wrong. It was until they looked closer at the mark that they saw that there was definitely something wrong. The mark wasn't completely made. Only two lines that crossed each other. No swirls or spirals. Since Phil was born early his mark couldn't form completely while he was in his mother's womb. As another day passed the mark darkened completely.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester grew up in totally different situations. Dan always was bullied and teased for being different. The labels 'freak', 'loner', and 'weirdo' constantly sticking to him. He had no friends to go to since no one wanted to even be by him. Even during Year 9, no one could bother to mature enough to be friends with him. Phil on the other hand, he had a perfect life. Everyone wanted to be friends with him. He had a mark still. Phil didn't have to worry about people thinking he was a freak. He just explained what happened to everyone, which they completely understood. Phil lead this school. Everyone looked up to him.
But everything came crashing down.
Three weeks before Year 12 Phil's parents informed him that they were moving to another part of England. Phil would be attending a new school, far away from everyone he ever known. He tried to tell his 'friends' but they were more upset that they were going to lose their popularity than Phil. This saddened Phil. His perfect life was crumbling underneath him. But still, he pulled the positive out of this situation. Thinking of all the amazing friends he can make in the future. Hopefully, this new school will be as great as his old one. If only he knew how bad it was there.
