Amys eyes fluttered open. White. Everywhere was white. Where was she? She blinked and then focused on a figure sitting at the side of the bed.
"Lou?" She said in surprise.
"Yes, it's me." Lou replies. She looked much the same as ever- corn-coloured hair cut short and forget-me-not-blue eyes- but very face was pale, her eyes strained.
Amy sat up. A sharp pain shot through her head and chest and she caught her breath. "Ow!" She gasped.
Lou put a hand gently on Amy's shoulder. "Careful," she said," don't try to move too quickly."
"Where am I?" Amy asked, looking around in confusion.
"In the hospital." Lou gently encouraged Amy to lie back against the pillows. "You've been unconscious for eight days. You woke up briefly yesterday." Her eyes searched Amy's. "Do you remember?"
Amy shook her head. She looked around the room. "Where's Mom?" Ss soon as the words were out, her eyes widened as the memories returned. The road. The tree. She stared at Lou. "We crashed!"
