Aydrian woke up sweating, having the same nightmare as always. He slowly got out of bed and went to splash some water on his hot face. He got to the lavatory, and found the bucket of water. He dipped his thin finger into the freezing water, and his whole hand followed suit. He scooped up some of the icy water and splashed it on his face. This was normal for Aydrian. After the nightmare, he always splashes water on his face to cool down. Aydrian got up and turned out of the bathroom, heading back toward his bedroom.

As he pulled on his itchy clothing, he thought about the other children in the town. None of them liked Aydrian. They all thought he was odd, and thought he was crazy. He didn't mind, though. He had the forest. The forest. Everything he ever thinks about is the forest. Aydrian opened his bedroom window and felt the summer breeze. It tickled his freckled nose with the scent of pollen and baking bread. He sighed and opened the door to his bedroom, and walked out into the dim hallway.

As Aydrian walked into the kitchen, the smell of sweet, decedent cakes greeted him. He took a long whiff of the heavenly scent and greeted his mother. "Good morning, Mother." He stated and walked coolly into the kitchen. "Good day, deary. How did you sleep?" She said cheerily. "I slept alright, how about you, Mother?" He said quietly. She rambled on and on, and Aydrian wished that he had not asked her, so he wouldn't have to be the one to hear about her Charlie Horses and cramps that kept her up. Aydrian glanced outside to see other children walking to school. Delighted to get away, he kissed his mother's cheek and walked out of the door to head to the schoolhouse. He walked alone on the cobble path to the old schoolhouse, wondering what they would be learning about today.

Aydrian settled into his seat at the school and looked up at the chalkboard attentively. As the bell rang loudly for the school to start, many kids rushed in and took their seats. Miss Bonavel strolled in casually and tapped her stick to the board. "Alright children, today we are going to be learning about the founder of our small town, Nicholas Trimble." The children around Aydrian all groaned at the teacher's prompt. Aydrian, however, listened intently at the teacher's lesson. "Trimble was a very hard working, noble explorer. He had a dream of settling down in a beautiful place no man has ever gone to." Miss Bonavel explained in excitement. "After many many months of searching for the perfect place, he had found it. This very place. It felt to him as though no one had ever discovered this grotto, so he and his wife began to build. They built the first buildings with only their two hands." Aydrian had started to look off through the window. "Trimble did grea......." Aydrian thought of the forest, how it called to him, how it longed for his presence. He felt something nail him in the back of his head, and he sharply turned back. The other children erupted with laughter as Aydrian felt his face grow hot. Embarrassed, he looked down onto the desk in shame. "Now, now children. Settle down!" Miss Bonavel demanded to the children, who were in hysterics. Aydrian longed for the school day to just be over.

As Aydrian walked out of the schoolhouse, he felt like no one understood him. The other children ran out of the schoolhouse all together, and played in the yard by it. Aydrian glanced at the bridge and walked onto it, the wood groaning as he stepped on it. He picked up a small, rounded stone, and chucked it at the crystal clear water. It skimmed across the icy substance and Aydrian watched it. He turned onto the path home, but he took a sharp turn to the right, heading straight into the forest.
