After her injury in the sandstorm, Onyx is housed in Queen Thorn's palace to be cared for by the medics. She begrudgingly accepts this offer. While she's recovering, Smolder and Thorn visit her frequently, offering to take her for walks around the palace or just making conversation.
As the months pass, she gradually starts opening up to her father - and, eventually, to Thorn. Overwhelmed by her compassion, she grows to accept the SandWing as her queen. There's still some awkwardness between them, but they end up bonding.
When Thorn passes away, the Eye chooses Onyx - now humbler and more respectful - to be queen.
