Chapter 39

With a bouquet of Lily's favourite violet peonies and a box of Honeydukes chocolate in his hand, James rang the doorbell and waited patiently outside the turquoise painted house.

A woman with strawberry blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes, who looked to be in her forties, opened the door. She had on a white apron and from the flour smeared on he face, it seemed like she had been baking.

"Yes?" she said, seeing the young boy at her doorstep.

"Hello Mrs. Evans." he greeted cheerfully, "I'm James. I go to Hogwarts with Lily."

She looked at James uncertainly for a moment, not having seen him before.

"Oh, come in." she said, moving aside to let him into the house, "James, did you say?"

Since he had mentioned Hogwarts, she was pretty sure he was being honest. Not many people knew about Lily's school.

"Yes." he replied, "I'm sure Lily must have told you about me."

He held out the bouquet of flowers to her, which she accepted with a smile.

"Actually, no. She has never talked about you." Mrs. Evans replied, still slightly confused.

"Oh. Where is Lily?"

"She's gone to the church." Mrs. Evans said, leading James to the living room.

"Are you sure she hasn't mentioned me?" James asked, as he sat down on the blue leather couch. Everything in the house had a touch of blue and James wondered why.

"Well, Lily doesn't talk about school much because her sister doesn't like it." Mrs. Evans said and James nodded in understanding. She then walked off into the kitchen. James took the time looking around the house. The walls inside were a light shade of blue and had numerous photos hung across them. He immediately recognized the small redheaded girl in the pictures.

Mrs. Evans came back to the room a few moments later, a cup of tea in her hand, which she gave to James.

"She usually just talks about Marlene and Mary." Mrs. Evans said, taking the seat across James on the side couch, "Oh, and that Potter boy."

"Potter boy?" James spluttered, spilling the hot tea down the front of his blue button up shirt. He wiped it away quickly and looked up to see Mrs. Evans frowning.

"Yeah. The only time I've heard her talking about a boy. She won't shut up about him."

"Uh... What does she say?"

"She complains a lot." Mrs. Evans said, smiling fondly, "How he's always showing off and how he got better grades than her in Transfiguration. It's quite cute, actually."

"Right." James said, slightly dazed at the new information as he set the empty cup on the coffee table, "Transfiguration."

"Don't you know him?" Mrs. Evans enquired, "She said he's some captain or something of that sorts."

"Um...well, actually..." James stammered, running a hand through his hair. He wondered how he was supposed to tell Mrs. Evans that the boy her daughter always talked about is the one right in front of her. But the front door opened before he could say anything.

"Mum?" Lily called as she walked in. James looked up hearing her voice and his stomach did a somersault when he saw her. Red hair in waves around her face, green eyes bright, wearing a black and white striped sundress and a matching black hat, she looked just as pretty as always.
