Simple.
That was one word that had never been used to describe Dan Howell.
Thick, maybe. Rude. Sarcastic. But never simple. Everyone, even those who never like Dan for anything more than target practice, knew that he was somewhat of an enigma. A procrastinator who always handed in his work on time. A "sleeper" who managed to ace every test, project and pop quiz thrown his way. A boy who could be so gentle with animals and yet an asshole to every human he encountered.
Maybe it was because of this that everyone, generally, trusted Dan's decisions as final say. When he came out to his family, there was no matter of "maybe it's a phase" or "but you're still young", only a general understanding. When he chose not to apply to any colleges, and instead earned a bartending license at a shady night school, no questions were asked.
And even when his parents learned of his plans to leave to New York, only a matter of hours before his departure, there were no tears or complaints, only short, though not bitter, goodbyes.
That was how Dan figures life should be. Simple. Sweet. Maybe a hint of sourness, but not enough to really ruin anything.
Unfortunately, as he was beginning to learn, nothing ever goes quite how you'd like that.
C'est la vie, c'est la mort.
