"EVVVAAAAN!" Connor shouts from the kitchen. Evan comes running in.
"W-What?! What's wr-wrong?!"
"We're out of milk, can you get some?"
"B-But I can't drive, why c-can't you go?"
"Because I'm cooking dinner."
"W-Why do you need m-milk for that?"
"I finished it this morning. I need some for this recipe says the internet."
Evan sighs. "Fine. I'll b-be right back." Evan grabs his wallet and an umbrella, then heads outside.
Evan opens his umbrella and listens to the sounds of raindrops plopping against the fabric. As he walks down the sidewalk, he jumps over puddles and feels the rain with his hand.
Evan buys two cartons of milk and rocky road ice cream, which is Connor's favorite. Evan never uses the plastic bag from the store, instead he asks for the reusable ones.
Evan stops at the crosswalk waiting for his turn to walk. When the light turns red, Evan crosses, but he drops his wallet on the ground. As he leans to pick it up, what he can't see is the car coming full speed at the traffic light. The driver slams on his pedal, but the rain causes the car to keep sliding. Evan looks up just in time to see the headlights blind his eyes.
The only damage to the driver was his windshield and his confidence. As for Evan... The driver dials 911 and jumps out of his car. He pulls unconscious Evan out of the street and onto the nearby grass. Blood trickles down Evan's forehead, nose, knees, and arms. His leg is also bent in the completely wrong direction.
The doctors in the ambulance work quickly to control Evan's blood loss and get fluids back in him. But through the whole thing, Evan doesn't wake up.

Connor was forced to take a break without the milk he needed for his recipe. Evan was taking forever, so Connor texted him a few times, but no response. While he's sending Evan another text, an unknown number calls his phone.
"Hello?" Connor answers.
"Connor Murphy?"
"This is him."
"Hello. You were the only emergency contact on Evan Hansen's phone-"
"Hold up, emergency?"
"Evan Hansen was in an accident down on Carten Street. We'd appreciate it if you could come down to the hospital as soon as possible."
"WHAT?! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME SOONER?!" Connor hangs up the phone before they can even answer. He grabs his car keys and darts towards the door.
Connor speeds down the road, parks as quickly as possible, then runs into the hospital. He slams his palms down on the front desk. "Evan Hansen! Where's Evan Hansen?!"
"Evan Hansen..." the desk lady types on her computer. "He's in surgery right now. You can wait here or we can call you when he's done."
"SURGERY?!" Connor stumbles backwards and grabs his head with both hands. "Surgery..." Connor throws up in the middle of the waiting room. A few nurses come out to clean and sit Connor down in a chair. They give him an ice pack for his forehead and attempt to help him relax. When Connor finally catches his breath, he immediately sits back up again. "What happened? Why is Evan..." the nurse pushes Connor back down.
"Evan was hit by a car. He has some internal bleeding and that's why he's having surgery performed."
"Internal... DAMN IT I SHOULD'VE BEEN THERE!" Connor turns around and slams his fist into the wall. The nurse continues attempting to calm Connor until he's finally left alone.
After many many hours of Connor pacing back and forth in the emergency room, they finally let him see Evan. It's about two in the morning and Connor's been watching people enter and leave the ER.
The nurse opens the door and Connor bursts past her and grabs Evan's hand. "Evan... Evan, I'm so sorry." Connor allows his tears to fall upon Evan's chest. The doctor walks in and sits down in his spinning chair.
"Is Evan going to be alright?" Connor's voice cracks through his tears. The doctor exchanges looks with the nurse, then sighs. "Evan's surgery went as planned, but..."
"But what?"
"Evan has entered a state of a coma."
Connor's legs go numb. Heat travels through his body as his heart seems to stop beating. The air around him becomes almost impossible to breathe.
"We can't determine how long it'll be until he wakes up, but you're welcome to visit him everyday." The doctor notices Connor's not comprehending any of his words. "I'll leave you two alone for a while."
Connor lets his eyes scan Evan's unconscious body. Seeing Evan bruised with tubes attached to him causes Connor's heart to sink father into his stomach. When his eyes meet Evan's, he loses it.
"EVAN!" Connor screams and falls to the floor, his head crashes against Evan's bed. He lets the tears flow harder than ever before. As his chest rapidly moves up and down his tears soak the thin blanket. "Goddamn it, I should've been there! I shouldn't have made you go, god I'm TERRIBLE!" Connor squeezes Evan's hand tight. "I'M SO SORRY EVAN!" His voice echoes through the emergency room.
"I'm so sorry..."
