Prologue: I'm in a coma, aren't I?
I am unemployed. I watch anime, I play video games, and I read manga.
No, I am not a shut-in.
I am a depressed, socially anxious, and attention deficit hyperactive twenty year old man, who has only recently regained the desire to live.
As such, I began attending my local community college, for post-secondary education is a must for many jobs in America.
I had been attending a college in the past, but due to various circumstances, I had a breakdown, and returned to my parents' house.
At any rate, today I drove to the campus, through the rain and fog of the morning.
I approached a traffic light, which suddenly turned yellow. But I decided I could make it if I sped up.
I hit the accelerator, when suddenly a yawn overtook me. For a fraction of a second I closed my eyes, but when I opened them, a child had suddenly run into the crosswalk!
"You idiot kid!" is what I wanted to say, but I didn't have time as I swerved to avoid him, successfully avoiding catastrophe.
My heart was racing as I continued towards my destination, the adrenaline still pumping.
In fact, I was so distracted that I didn't notice the eighteen wheeler that ran a red light, and I plowed into the side of the massive truck.
I could feel time slowing down as I vainly slammed my brakes.
I had just enough time to think, "Damn. I wanted to live," before everything went black.
Now, I have never believed in the afterlife. I am an agnostic, which is to say that I made the judgment that one could never make a judgment about the unseen nature of the world, for it is by very nature, unknowable. Many religions have tried, but why are there so many? Surely the coincidence that one is born in a nation of mostly Christians and Christianity is also the one true religion is much too large to be possible. Since I was certainly born in a mostly Christian nation, it must mean Christianity is false, right? Well, in truth, my thought process on the matter was nothing of the sort, but that is an amusing thought, isn't it? Oh, I'm becoming distracted.
After several seconds of being totally senseless, no sight, no hearing, no smell, no feeling, certainly no taste, I began to see images. I was in an arid hilly place, and I was surrounded by soldiers, ancient Greeks called 'hoplites.' I held a long spear and a shield, I was in the front row of the formation known as a phalanx, a shield wall and roof bristling with spear tips. I could see the enemy was likewise a phalanx. We marched forwards, and I somehow managed to avoid the opposing spear points. The formations degraded, and I pulled out my short sword. I killed several people before I was stabbed in the side by an opponent I hadn't seen. The scene changed.
This time, I was on horseback with a composite bow in my hands, arrow drawn and aimed towards a group of enemy soldiers I was circling. The scene looked vaguely Mongolian, but I was only intimately familiar in Ancient Greek civilization before I died, so I couldn't tell. I'd played a video game once about ancient Greece, so I knew a little about it. Or, maybe I wasn't dead? No, there was a definite feeling of finality. I just knew that I was watching all my past lives. Reincarnation wasn't a very western concept, but I was agnostic, so it was just as plausible as anything. Anyway, I knew that my life had really ended this time. I was watching every life I'd ever lived.
After Mongolia was 1800's France, then 12th century England, a tribe in Africa, on and on. I seemed to have lived in every part of the world imaginable, and every time, there was one thing in common; I was a warrior. Every time- but this time. Maybe dying in battle was the key to reincarnation, and I died in an accident? Now I was going to die for real?
