It works!

It was a fine summer morning. The birds were chirping, the wind was blowing, and the townsfolk were busy as usual.

Levy McGarden was making her way to the library, basket in hand, to return her now finished book.

"Bonjour, Levy!" the town cheered, smiling happily at the girl.

"Bonjour!" she replied with a sweet tone.

The town noticed her peculiar behavior. She was reading in public without paying attention to her surroundings.

Women don't read!

But that didn't matter to Levy, she couldn't get enough of reading. At her home she almost always had her nose in a book.

Now entering the library, Levy waved hello to the librarian.

"Bonjour Sam! Any new books?" Levy asked.

Sam chuckled. "Not since yesterday."

Levy climbed a ladder connected to a shelf full of fiction. "That's okay, I'll just pick...this one." Levy grabbed a navy blue book and stepped off the ladder.

"But you've read that twice already!" Sam exclaimed.

"I know. I just can't get enough of it. All of the adventure sets me off into a different world." Levy sighed dreamily.

"If you like it so much, it's yours."

"Really?"

"Really. Go ahead, run along." Sam started shooing her out of the library.

Levy called outside of the building a quick thanks and started getting lost in her new book. She avoided busy townsfolk easily and failed to notice a certain someone walking toward her.

"Bonjour Levy." a bulky man greeted. Levy didn't hear him.

After calling her name several times, the man got frustrated and took her book. Levy looked up in alarm.

"Oh, Laxus. I didn't see you there." Levy said, trying to grab her book.

"Well you should have. You need to stop reading and focus on other, more important things. Like me." Laxus flexed his arms for effect, earning a cheer from a group of women near them.

"May I have my book please?" Levy asked politely. Laxus tossed the book into the mud.

"You don't need it. When women read, they start thinking and getting ideas and," Laxus shivered. "Let's get off that topic. But anyway, I wanted to ask you something."

Levy picked up her book and cleaned it with the edge of her orange dress. "And what is it you want to ask?"

"Do you want to join my hand in marriage?" Laxus said.

Levy continued cleaning her book. "No thanks." She started toward her house when a big explosion boomed.

"Gramps!" Levy exclaimed.

"The old wacko is up to no good!" Laxus' henchman Freed said. The two hooted in laughter.

"Gramps is not crazy!" Levy hollered, running to her home.

When she got there, Levy saw Gramps next to a big contraption. Smoke was coming out and a pile of wood sat in the front of it.

"Gramps, what happened?" Levy asked with concern.

"Levy! It works! I built something that works! Watch." Gramps pressed a big red button.

Lights flashed on and off and a hatchet came down on a log, chopping it in half and tossing it in a big pile. The contraption made metal banging sounds but kept repeating the same task.

Levy smiled joyfully. "It does work Gramps. Better pack it up in the carriage for tonight's show. Wouldn't want to miss it." Gramps nodded cheerfully.

"I should start packing right away..." Gramps trailed off, lifting the contraption and packing it away in a carriage.

A few hours later

"I'm off Levy! Take care!" Gramps gave Levy a hug and got on his horse and carriage.

"Bye Gramps! Be careful!" Levy shouted to his retreating figure.

Levy entered her house and started reading her book, in no way knowing of what was to come.
