Ken Kaneki had been at Hyakuya Orphanage for as long as he could remember. His mother had died from exhaustion and his father had left her not long after Kaneki was born. At least, that's what he was told.

In truth, Kaneki's body was one of the few compatible for Project Ghoul, a top secret experiment involving human experimentation on the bodies of young children to turn them into weapons to be used against vampires. Upon discovering this, the Hyakuya Sect took action as they had done with many children before. They killed both of his parents and kidnapped Kaneki.

Kaneki was experimented on in an underground lab with about 15 other children ranging from ages 3-7. One by one, the children died, their bodies rejecting the organ known as the Kagune. After a year, the testing and surgeries produced results. At age 6, Kaneki was the only child left alive. Endless torture, injections, drugs and surgeries had produced the ultimate weapon.

The implantation of the kagune had been successful. He had been given impenetrable skin and heightened physical capabilities. Unfortunately, the researchers found that this power came with a price. Normal food could no longer sustain Kaneki's altered body. He was now only able to consume human flesh.

The researchers tampered with Kaneki's memories, erasing all knowledge of the underground lab from his mind, along with all memories of his parents.

After another month, Kaneki was sent to Hyakuya Orphanage. He was told that he was different from the other children and that he could never tell them about himself. He had to cover his left eye and he couldn't eat with the others. Regardless, the years he spent there were happy ones.

Kaneki was a shy kid that always had his nose in a book. Because of this, he didn't grow very close to the other children at the orphanage. That is- until Hideyoshi Nagachika came along. Hideyoshi- or Hide as everyone called him- was outgoing, energetic and friendly. Hide reached out to Kaneki and got him to come out of his shell. Kaneki had made his first friend.

A few months later, Mika arrived. Hide instantly befriended him, dragging Kaneki along. The three of them became close, and the stifling loneliness Kaneki had felt before faded. In the months after, many more children began to fill the orphanage and Kaneki found his family.

Yūichirō was the last to arrive. He was moody, anti-social and wanted nothing to do with the other children. So, of course, Hide and Mika were determined to befriend him.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't have much time to try.

That very day, the trumpets of the apocalypse sounded, signaling the downfall of humanity.
