If father told me to do it, I did it.
Even if it was traveling across the village for some water in a tiny pond.
Because that was a woman's job...or so they said so.
Women were to listen, close their mouths, and make children. The idea of it disgusted me. But it's not like I had a say in it anyways.
My long hanbok dragged against the dirt as I walked to the pond. I hated the pond.
The streets were crowded as always, from dirt poor beggars to the king's men.
Hando, the silk merchant waved to me as I scurried along the street, "What are you up to Phoenix?"
"Um... I'm going to pick some flowers in the valley." I lied.
I had to lie. No one could know where my father's sacred pond was. Well it wasn't his but no one else knew about the amazing water it had. I had always wondered where it came from, how was there a beautiful pond just in the middle of nowhere?
Maybe it used to be someone's property until they lost it during the war. Yes...that must've been it.
I picked up the heavy skirt so I could walk faster. I tried my best to avoid any communication with anyone.
I may have been seen as the rude daughter of the town's greatest merchant, but at least I wasn't known as the problematic woman.
The dirt road soon came to an end. I looked behind me to make sure no one was following, and headed towards the rock road.

The water sparkled like it always did. There was a tinge of silver to it, mesmerizing.
I pushed the bucket under the water and filled it with all the water I could get, like I always did.
That day I left home earlier than I usually did to get water. If I hadn't left so early, life wouldn't have been eternal torment.
Maybe I wouldn't have left so early that morning if fate was on my side.

For some reason I felt uneasy. My chest hurt and my vision had little stars. Maybe I should take a sip of water?
I scooped water with my bare hands and drank it. Refreshing. It might've been dirty but I didn't care at the moment.
I stood up and was about to take my leave when I saw it.
My whole body stiffened as I turned my body towards the massive tree that hid the pond from the rest of the world.
It sat on the highest branch of the tree leaned against the tree with its eyes closed.
My grandmother told me about it. I heard stories about it.
The stories where never good.
Gumiho.
