Chapter 10: The Fall

Not long after destroying Jack's most recent building project,

Frank had sent more people to destroy one of the other two buildings.

This had made many people in Frank's village question his leadership style

and worry that at any minute Jack may attack them. This had led

to some people abandoning the village to join Jack's village. The people

that left were the more intelligent people who could see that Frank

was on the losing side, they predicted that within a week, Frank's

village would fall. However, neither Martin nor Marvin gave up, they

were determined to protect their home at all costs. They along with a

few other able-bodied people were put into another impromptu group,

seemingly Frank's forte, to patrol the village and alert the Lieutenant

if they see any unusual activity. Surprisingly however, for a good while

nothing happened. A couple months had gone by and still no activity

from Jack's village. Now, three months later everyone had let their

guard down, and the patrol had been cut in half. The only people to

remain in the patrol group were Martin, Marvin and two others. That

is what Martin and Marvin were doing, on the day it happened. They

were out by the entrance to their side of Walkertown, just talking.

They had finally let their guard down too.

"Hey Marvin, do you think Jack is even going to attack? Maybe

he was just bluffing to scare us into submission. It's like that one

president said, speak softly, and carry a big stick."

"You mean Theodore Roosevelt?"

"Yeah, that's the guy."

"Ok than, well I am not too sure that that is the case; but

maybe you are correct."

"You know, why don't we take a break? I mean we've almost

walked the entire perimeter of the village and we haven't seen anything

to make us concerned."

"Yeah, but what if they come while we are asleep?"

"Eh, I think we'll be fine." Martin sat down under a nearby tree.

A second later Marvin joined him and the two fell asleep for a nap

soon after. The next thing they knew, they were being woken up by

one of the other two patrolmen, who was panicking.

"Woah, why are you two sleeping?! Jack has just led a large

group of soldiers past you two while you slept. We gotta warn the

others quickly, but I don't know if we can get there in time." The

patrolman said frantically.

"Wait what? Come on Marvin, let's go." That having been said the

three of them ran as fast as they could back to their village. By the

time they returned, it was chaos. The Lieutenant had them start

fighting in a vain attempt to hold back Jack's army, which had the

support of Mark's village.

"Oh no, if only I hadn't suggested we take a nap. I shoulda

known that would result in something bad happening."

"Let's worry about that later Martin, right now we've gotta keep

fighting, we cannot let Jack win. Otherwise everything we have worked

for in Frank's village will have been for naught." With this stated,

Martin was once again determined to protect his home. This however

was not enough to win, as after about an hour of fighting with many

casualties on both sides, though more so for Frank's village, someone off

in the distance was heard yelling in triumph. They yell to Jack "We

won! Frank has kicked the bucket!" With this terrible news heard, and

knowing they had lost, the rest of Frank's militia surrendered, even

Marvin and Martin who saw the futility in continuing the fight. The

day had been lost, Frank as well as his village had fallen, and what

was left was annexed by Jack's village. After it was all over, as Jack

and his men led the few remaining members of Frank's militia back to

his village, where they will have to work for the rest of their lives,

Martin took one last look back, reflecting on what could have been had

things gone differently.
