One more to go, I told myself as I reached for the last branch on the tallest oak in the field. I pulled myself up to a nook where three bright red apples hung off their stems, dangling happily in the autumn breeze. I plucked them satisfactorily, and carefully placed each in my backpack. "I'm finished Rosemary!" I call happily down to my best friend in the world, Rosemary Willows. "Thanks Rue, now we can deliver the fruit to the Peacekeepers. The reaping is only two days away, and you know that we will want more food in the shops now that there will be two less gatherers..." She stopped. "Hey, don't worry, we might have a victor this year!" I said determinedly. My grandma, Rill Seeder, won the Hunger Games years ago.  I sometimes get to go to her house in Victor's Village, it's very nice. Rosemary finished gathering the strawberries below me and looked at me expectantly. Oh yeah, I thought. I almost forgot... I lifted my face to the sky and sang my four-note tune, signifying that the harvest for today was over. The mockingbirds above carried my tune through the trees. I heard the rustling of branches, and people getting down from their trees, or up from their bushes. I jumped from my tree to the next, until I reached the willow in my backyard. I climbed down and gave Rosemary the apples. "Make sure not to bruise them." I added. The peacekeepers would have a fit. "Okay, bye Rue! See you tomorrow!" "Bye!" I walked in to my little house to find my Mother waiting for me. She gave me a great big hug. "How was your day sweetie?" She asked. "Fun! Except school of course, we learned about the process of fruit decontamination. But they let us try it this time. Mine wasn't that decontaminated though." I said laughing. My Mother laughed. "You sound just like your Father." She said with sadness. I bit my lip. Just last November my Father died by a Peacekeeper shooting him through the head. It was during a time of starvation, when my family could barely work anymore due to lack of strength. He stole from the market to help us. An eagle-eyed peacekeeper caught him and immediately shot him. We didn't even get the food afterward, but that didn't seem to matter. My little sister Clover broke into my thoughts. "Woo!" I laughed. She still hasn't learned to pronounce my name. "Hi Clover!" I said picking her up and tickling her belly, like my father used to do. She giggled. I walked into the kitchen to see my other sisters. Sunny, Lavender, Orchid, Rose, and Lily. Clover is the youngest at only three years old. Sunny is eleven, Lavender is nine, Orchid is eight, Rose is seven, and Lily is five. I love them all so much, and I am so glad they are safe from the Reaping. But I am not. This year, I have my name in the Reaping Bowl eight times. Once beacause it's the law, and the others are for Tesserae. One years supply for each member of my family. I can only pray that the odds will be in my favor this year.
