You will want to know the background Rigg had, and perhaps little Oliver's background which is in BOOK 3.
You do NOT have to read BOOK 3 in order to understand Oliver, HOWEVER, you will want to understand Rigg's background. So please, read BOOKS 4&5 BEFORE you read this book! It will save you tons of questions and confusion.
You do not have to read this series in order, however, when past characters are mentioned you will know who they are if you read it in order. The most important book to read BEFORE this one is BOOK 4 when Rigg comes into the series. There will be a spoiler in this book, sort of, if you DO NOT read Jonah beforehand as well.
