“Charlie!”

“You better have something important to say to be calling me right now,” I yelled out to one of my employees.

A small orange haired ginger popped her head into my office. I looked up from my pile of paperwork and glared. The girl winced as she her brown eyes met my cold blue ones.

“So sorry Charlie! You know I wouldn’t interrupt on a regular day considering how busy you normally are but-”

“Spit it out Holly. I don’t have all day.”

Holly fiddled with her fingers before she nodded slowly. “It’s an emergency. Code 392.”

My face dropped as my previous work become unimportant. I quickly got up from my rolling office chair and hurried out. Holly lead the way knowing that time was of the essence here. We walked past the stairs that led up to an extensive greenhouse on the roof of the building and passed by cooling refrigerators holding a number of plants and flowers. Out in the main section of our flower shop, I was met with a horrible scene.

“I love you Casey! I don’t care that you tricked me! I don’t care that you were pretending to someone else. What about those nights we spent together? That was just you and me, wasn’t it?” A chestnut brunette boy of minimal attractiveness was practically kneeling on the ground. The girl in question, Casey, was standing in front of him. She was a pretty girl and one of my best workers. Everyone in the store had gathered in a circle to watch the scene that was developing. I held the bridge of my nose knowing exactly how this was going to turn out.

“Listen Jack, I- I can’t be with you. I was only supposed to break your heart. You’re not supposed to love me back!”

“So you do love me then?” Jack asked relieved. “Please Casey, I don’t care. I just want to be with you. I want to learn about you. The real you! I want to know your favorite color and your favorite food. What’s your major? Where do you live? Are you a neat freak or not? What do you honestly look like at your worst? I want to wake up to you in the morning to find out all of this stuff.”

The now growing audience made a few ‘aw’ sounds. I resisted the urge to growl in frustration.

“Jack, I’m not the girl you think I am,” Casey responded. “You’re just a player anyway, right?”

Holly was standing next to me also watching this disaster unfold. I leaned over and whispered in her ear, “Take notes newbie. He’s going in for the kill.”

Jack stood up and grabbed Casey’s hands. “I’ve changed Case, I promise. Let me spend the rest of my life proving that to you and finding out who you are.”

Casey, like any other girl in the world, couldn’t handle it anymore and proceeded to kiss Jack. The whole store audience erupted in applause and cat calls. I finally did let out a grunt and turned on my heal to proceed back to my office. Holly was right behind me though thankfully. She provided me with a good outlet to let off steam.

“That’s the third girl we’ve lost this month,” I complained as soon as I was out of the crowd.

“I’m so sorry Charlie,” Holly mumbled.

I shook my head while entering into my office. I paced fervently as my thoughts began to wonder.

“It’s not your fault. Boys are just getting more crafty now-a-days.” Damn college men. They had been proving harder to play than high school boys ever since I started in this business…six years ago. “We need to hire some more girls.”

“They are so hard to recruit,” Holly pointed out.

I silently agreed. It was difficult to go out publishing our association when we weren’t exactly a known organization. Actually no one knew about us except for those already a part of us. We were a well-kept secret that was in serious danger of ever being exposed.
