"Did Anna know Ryan had a girlfriend?" Kyle asked routinely.
"No, or she would have told me. She thought he was one of the groomsmen for one of her registered online weddings. There is a spot on the site that allows people to talk to each other of a wedding party to get wedding help and ideas for the Bride and Groom. A lot of people use the site to get to know some of the other wedding party before they even get to the weddings. It makes a wedding more fun and helps people hang out easier without shyness." Harmony explained.
"That's a great idea." Kyle said knowing his wife would love the idea. Harmony just smiled.
"Were you aware that Ryan and his girlfriend, Jolene, left comments on your website?"
"No, I don't like wasting time in there, I don't have the patience." Harmony shrugged.
"I want to rule out Anna as a suspect or protect her if this as a random killing from some psycho that might have been hanging out in the bar looking for a victim. I want to know if she had a squabble with either of them beforehand and had someone deal with Jolene so she could have Ryan?" Kyle said looking for a reaction.
"Oh, hell no. Anna would have told me, we don't lie to each other. I know she had never met either one of them before Friday night and Anna wouldn't be so into a guy that she would have someone do dirty work for her." Harmon said but stood firm in her statement. Kyle believed her but was interested in her wording.
Kyle was writing things down that Harmony couldn't see and he was paying attention to her reaction from the corner of his eyes. She looked worried but not too much so.
"You know Mr. Mason, Anna is my sister, we've grown up in each other's houses and are together most of the time. She is a good person and spends her days wanting to help each other. She wouldn't hurt anyone and never has. Her going out on a date with a guy she didn't know was new and scary for her. That is why she wanted to meet him in public." Harmony explained.
"That was smart to meet in public." Kyle said wanting to sound like he was on her side.
"From what I know from Anna, she didn't really care about Ryan. She was just feeling a bit lonely and thought she met a single guy she might have liked and that was all. That is why she was sneaking off to meet a boy to do something on her own, this was the first time. She had nothing to do with Jolene's murder and told me she was going to come in to talk to you when she got home. If you would have just waited until she got home from her trip you would have known that." Harmony said. "Honestly do you think as small as she is that she could kill someone then go shopping on a trip the next day as if nothing happened? I know Anna. If anything, traumatic happens she breaks down in a pile of a crying mess. She is on her way home today so I will make sure she comes in to talk to you."
Kyle could tell that Harmony was getting uncomfortable and irritated so she was trying to cut the conversation short.
"Just a couple more questions Harmony. Do you know of any kind of threat against Anna or her family?" Kyle asked catching Harmony off guard.
"No, why would anyone threaten Anna or any of us?" She said surprised.
"Just trying to rule out any possibility that Anna was the target." Kyle said watching Harmony closely.
"No. We haven't had any unwanted problems." Harmony said straight at Kyle. This time he fully believed her.
"Did you know that Anna is on the same path of travel that my son Jake is on?" Kyle said. He could see the red flush of Harmony's cheeks. He knew he was taking a risk but had to know for sure that Anna was following Jake. The look on her face told him all he needed to know. Harmony didn't say anything so he thought he would encourage her.
"I could check your phone records Harmony." Kyle said gently not wanting to bully her.
"I'm sorry. Ok, I know she was going off on her own because she is freaked out about moving. Her Dad just got back into the country and told her we were moving to an island because he must have some kind of medical procedure and he is sick or something. I think Anna freaked out because she thinks we may not come back to the United States so she is shopping. There aren't that many paths to take on the way down so it isn't uncommon that they would be traveling in the same direction. Anna's been buying stuff at places we've been to before but trying to get information to keep in touch with the outside world as well." Harmony said almost as if she had prepared this speech already. "Anna hasn't talked to me about any boy on her trip. I've talked to her and she told me about the things that she bought. So, if she is on the same path as your son, then I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional."
"Jake told me he didn't see Anna's father with her on his trip when she was around. As far as he knows Anna is traveling alone." Kyle said but Harmony remained silent and shrugged as if she didn't know. Kyle could tell Harmony was trying to protect Anna and her father from any ugly drama.
"What does Anna and Jake on the same road have to do with Anna's date on Friday night?"
Harmony asked, quickly recovering her discomfort by the line of questioning.
"Nothing. I figured I had to talk to Colin and it would be easier if I could talk to Anna first. Does Anna have short black hair?"
"No, she wears wigs so people don't recognize her, especially if something like Friday happens." Harmony said. He could tell she was getting agitated and would shut down soon.
"Last question Harmony. Could I get Anna's phone number so I can talk to her?" Kyle asked.
Harmony shifted uncomfortable for a moment, but then looked him straight in the eyes as if to challenge him. He had a gut feeling she knew more than what she was saying.
"I don't feel comfortable giving out her number without her father's permission as our numbers are private. Like I said he is famous so he is afraid if we give our numbers away they will attract crazy people. I can give you her father's number but that is it." Harmony said clearly giving him a look like he was overstepping boundaries.
"Thank you, Harmony, you've been very helpful." Kyle said and shook her hand.
"My pleasure." She winked before turning to go back into her house. Kyle was aware the sparkle in the gesture didn't reach her eyes.
Kyle had to rush to get to the airport. He knew Harmony was being protective but he wasn't worried and was just covering bases. For some reason, he thought the information he was going to get over Anna's mother would help crack the West Coast Runaways cases as well. He had a suspicion either Colin and Anna were being stalked by who killed Tessa or Colin was just an unfortunate soul to be connected to so many murders. Jolene was the only link holding the West Coast Runaways and Anna's life story together. It all would have been easier if he was able to talk to Anna directly. There was information being withheld which pulled Kyle's mind into too many directions. Should he feel protective over Anna's family or protective of his family from her and her father?
He wondered if Jake was as safe as Stacy was.
The winter snow was still thick on the outskirts, but the roads were cleared and much easier to drive on. Of course, it had taken many trucks to remove the white icy mess for that to happen, but all the people that ventured out of the house for the day looked like they were happy to be in a rush to catch up with life. With Kyle's plane just starting to board, he made it to the airport with barely a second to spare.
On his flight to Colorado he couldn't help going over everything Harmony had said. Either she didn't really know what was going on in Anna's personal life or she was in on hiding family secrets.
