Ever since I could remember, I’ve always been hanging out at the neighboring old couple’s home, and why was that? Because every time I’d go there, I’d be welcomed with a warm smile from the big brother next door which always made me feel right at home.

My parents were always busy so they barely had time for me, but I wasn’t going to complain either. After all, they’re doing it for the family and I just couldn’t be selfish enough to complain.

((Set approximately with reader at the age of five and Kiyoshi at the age of seven))

“Yo, [Name], you came today too~” Kiyoshi smiled warmly, and extended his hand which I immediately took.

I nodded quietly and sat on his lap.

“Would you like me to read you a story?” He tilts his head over to me to take a good look at my face.

I blushed slightly and nodded once more.

It’s not like I was a quiet kid, but when it came to Kiyoshi, I had so much to say that the words just wouldn’t form.

((Nine years later))

It made me happy that Kiyoshi, and I still had a close relationship. While he might still think of me as nothing more than an ordinary childhood friend. Somewhere along the line, I started to develop feelings for him.

I was sitting with Kiyoshi at Maji Burger, listening to the stories he had to offer. He’d just entered his first year of high school and was pretty pumped.

“Well, Seirin is not a bad school.” He praised. “Quite the opposite actually.”

“Though only one thing shocked me…” He mumbled. “I can’t believe they don’t have a basketball club.”

“But of course you must’ve done something about that, no?” I smiled, knowing Kiyoshi; he wouldn’t let such a thing slide. He loved basketball more than anyone I’d ever met; it was his passion, his life, it was like Kiyoshi and basketball were one.

“Hahah, of course!!” He grinned widely.

“Today, I met with a guy called Hyuuga Junpei.” He began, excited. “While he might seem like quite the unfriendly fellow, it seems like he loves basketball more than anyone!”

“Though he quit basketball…”

“But…I’ll make sure I don’t let such a love for basketball go to waste!” Kiyoshi looked determined. Determined to make Hyuuga get back into basketball, and since I knew better than anyone that if Kiyoshi wanted to make something happen, it will.

I’d been invited out by Kiyoshi a lot this past week. Despite being stressed from school and exams; just seeing him, brought me inner peace.

Kiyoshi had successfully founded Seirin’s Basketball Club with the help/consent of his newly made friends.

He seemed so excited that I couldn’t help but be excited with him.

 ((A week later))

Kiyoshi had been looking forward to this day; the time had come where Seirin’s Basketball Team put their skills to the test. They had sworn they’d be the number one in Japan, and were ready to see it through together.

I entered the stadium and sat down.

The first match went without a hitch and Seirin successfully won.

However, by the time a current team went on court, I just had a bad feeling.

They didn’t look like honest players, not in the least.

‘Kirisaki Dai Ichi, huh…’

I shivered thinking about them; they just gave off that type of feeling.

I watched intently as the match carried out, but before I knew it Kiyoshi had fallen to the ground, clutching his knee and screaming in pain.

I was too shocked to even move, my heart sunk. I didn’t know what to do except run off immediately to the hospital they had carried Kiyoshi to.

It frustrated me that I couldn’t meet with him immediately, not until the doctors allowed it. I decided to wait, until the nurse said I could come in.

There he was, sitting on the hospital bed, staring quietly out the window.

“Ah, [Name]!” He greeted me with the same warm smile he’d always give me whenever I saw him, however it seemed slightly different today, and I knew better.

“What’s wrong, why the glum face?” He pinched my cheeks gently as I sat down on the chair placed next to his bed.

I had so much I wanted to say, just like when we were kids, but the words just wouldn’t come out so I just clutched the bed sheets, containing the anger I held for myself, the resentment I held for the person who did this to Kiyoshi.

“H-How is your leg…?” I finally said, voice slightly trembling

“It’s fi-“I cut him off before he could continue. “Don’t lie to me!” I yelled. “I don’t need your pretty lies. How long do you think I’ve known you already… Please tell me the truth…” I pleaded, feeling the warm tears streaming down my face.

Kiyoshi smiled painfully. “Don’t cry, come on…” He wiped the tears gently off my face with his big hands.

“No escaping you, huh…” He sighed, his old smile returning to his face. “They said I’d had to stay under treatment for a year, of course that’s the quickest way so I can play basketball again next year.” He smiled sweetly before looking slightly glum.

“However, I won’t be able to play basketball again after that…” He tore his eyes away from mine, he just couldn’t take it.

My eyes widened in shock, gritting my teeth. The tears continued to stroll down my face more than ever.

‘Why isn’t there anything I can do for him, why…Even though I love you so much? Why am I so powerless…?’

He loved the sport so much but now just because of another person’s wrong doing, he’d have to let it go.

“Don’t cry…” He whispered sweetly and got closer.

“Huh…” I looked at him, shocked as our lips touched gently.

He smiled.

“Seeing you always puts me at ease.” His hands, slightly trembling, clutched mine. “Stay with me a little longer?”

I nodded, face flushed.

‘I’d stay with you forever if I could…’

“Thank you.” He pulled me to closer to him and hugged me gently.

‘That’s what I’ve been meaning to say to you for years but never got the chance… Thank you, Kiyoshi. Thank you for being there, always. ‘
