You looked at me from across the room.

I looked away.

Hoping that the book I was reading,

Would distract me enough,

To be able to blink back the tears brimming at the back of my eyes.

So, I closed them instead,

Trying not to think about your gaze on me.

But, you already seemed to know,

To strike at the exact moment I felt weak.

You walked over,

And gave me a pained look,

Took tufts of your hair in your hands

Then, cradled your head in them,

And said,"Why do I keep doing this to you."

I wondered,

How many times were you pretending,

That I missed?
