It was a beautiful evening in the little Norwegian village. The sun was shining and it was pretty warm out. A bit outside the village, in a big castle, a big party was taking place.
In the castle hundreds of girls was dancing, trying to get the prince's attention, as Madame Vilde was singing at the top of her lungs. Magnus, Madame Vilde's husband, played the piano as always.

The party was for prince Even. He was meant to find a girl he liked tonight, who could become queen one day.
As Even danced with a girl called Sonja, he felt butterflies in his stomach. Was that feeling love? He didn't know, he was only 15, he had never experienced such a thing before.

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door and was let in.
It was a very old woman. Vilde stopped singing and Magnus stopped playing the piano. In fact, everybody stopped dancing. Even excused himself to Sonja and went to talk to the woman.
-„What's bringing you here?" the prince asked.
-„My best prince, I need a shelter for the night, could I please stay here?" the old woman asked.
The prince scoffed.
-„And what do I get in return?" he said as he gave the woman a judging look.
-„Here, take this rose, it's all I have..." the old woman said and held a rose towards the prince. The prince laughed.
-„Do you think that that ugly old rose could pay the price for staying here?" the young prince said and rolled his eyes.
„Well, it doesn't, so get out before I send the guards on you." the prince smirked.

As he said that, the old woman turned into a beautiful enchantress.
Prince Even and his guests looked at her in awe.
„Please beautiful lady, please forgive me! I will give you shelter for the night, you don't have to pay me!" prince Even said.
The beautiful enchantress was angry and started screaming at the prince.
-„All you care about is beauty! Never do that again! You should never judge someone by how they look! I'm going to curse everyone in here for what you did to me!"
The guests started screaming and ran out of the castle. In a minute the only ones left was the prince, the people who worked for him and the enchantress.
-„Please! I will never do that again! I promise!" the prince said in fear.
But it was too late, the woman enchanted the whole castle, and the people who lived there. The young prince turned into an big ugly beast and his servants turned into things.
-„This rose is going to drop a flower petal everyday, it's a very big rose, so you've got time. The only thing that can break the spell is that someone learns to love you, and that you love them back, otherwise you and your servants will stay like this forever!"
The enchantress made everyone outside the castle forget about it, and with it, everything and everyone in there.
