He stirred beside her, the bed sheets rustling as he did. Mei would've told him "goodbye" but she never wanted to tell him that word.
"Until later, Mei." His lips, feather light, touched her cheek. His hair tickled her ears, and she let a little smile escape before she turned onto her side.
But then he was gone.
Nothing but ruffled bed sheets, and a hazy memory of the night before remained behind.
Her eyes opened once she heard the click of the door, going back in its place. Mei wasn't sure when he'd call again. He always promised to call at 9, but only did it two thirds of the time. He was that kind of fickle man, after all. There was nothing she could do about it, except clutch her phone to her chest and pray for a call to come.
Breathing deeply, she inhaled his lingering smell on the sheets.
She already missed the scent of his menthol cigarettes.
