Melaina continuously snuck glances at her iPod under her desk to change the music playing into her ears during math class, since Mr. Ross had a habit of starting class before the bell. She skipped another song, then left Caraphernelia to play. Her phone buzzed in her bag.

Across the school, Edward skillfully guided his sister to their next class while she walked in autopilot. Alice was lost in a vision of another time. Eight minutes in the future, to be exact.

Alice recognized the dark-haired girl in her vision as a student in her art and French classes. It was Melaina Jackson, a quiet human who was more often than not wearing earbuds to lose herself in music as she shied away from people.

Melaina fled from Algebra class with tears in her light eyes. She clutched her cracked cellphone in her hand. The words on the fractured screen were angry and hurtful. Irrationally, she felt that if she could gain control again then she would be okay.

So, to the school bathroom she ran.

Mel stumbled into the first stall and whipped out her pocket knife from the smallest pocket of her backpack. The pink and orange hilt gleamed in an ironically beautiful way as she used the blade to draw blood.

With each line on her pale wrist, Mel's tense frame calmed. She no longer felt the numbing anger from her stepdad's accusing words. Melaina's tearstained face snapped up as the stall door was ripped from its hinges.

A bloodthirsty vampire stood before her. His coal eyes stared at the human girl with hunger. He felt her fear, her surprise, but nothing held his attention more than the scent of fresh blood.

Jasper pounced and Melaina screamed.

Edward's grip tightened in alarm, and Alice snapped out of the future with a gasp.

"I'll find Jasper," Edward said. He saw what his pixie sister had seen for the future. "Stop her."
