Today was the day, the day of the one race that will help me get into the Racing Academy. My nerves were tingling with excitement of the prospect of the race, whilst butterflies fluttered in my belly with the reality of whatever place I get will impact on the next step I have to achieving my dreams...
"Alright, Racers if you please start to go to the start line for the competition. Audience if you could move to the stands please and we can get this show on the road." The announcer laughed at his joke, my eyes rolling at the corniness of it.
"Come on Karla! Let's get to the track!" My best friend, Jackson, bounced over to me as he practically shouted with joy.
"How can you be so happy about this? Our futures depend on this, Jackson." I turn to him, my sharp blue eyes glaring at him.
"Because I love racing as much as you do and not to mention that we can repeat this for another 2 years so this isn't as much as a big deal as you're think Kaz." Jackson linked his arm through mine and dragged me to our racing cars, mine being red and gold with Jackson's being neon green and pitch black.
"Alright racers lets get started. Get in your cars and lets do this thang!" The start-off girl shouted as the crowd settled into their seats. I took a deep breath as I made myself more relaxed and comfortable in my driving seat. Checking all of the buttons and gadgets in front of me, only looking up to see the girl once again standing in front of all of us but this time with a checkered flag in her hand.
"Alrighty then, On your marks...Get ready...Get set..." Jesus Christ, is she ever going to say 'Go'? "GO! GO! GO!" She screamed, eventually, waving her flag violently. I practically kicked the accelerator of my racing car and zoomed ahead of five competitors and was in line with Jackson. Glancing at him I gave a thumbs up to him, before speeding up even more.
The wind blew past me, the whistling noise loud in my ears. I gripped the steering wheels tighter and I went into what I called 'The Zone'. The capital letters show how serious I could get whilst in it. Jackson described me as a crazed, lunatic, competitive, dangerous monster when I was in The Zone. I pass by more competitors and all too soon the race was finished, the scores weren't up but it was a photo finish with myself and another racer. "Karla you're going to win and if not you will still be able to get into the Racing Academy, and hopefully myself included." Jackson wrapped his arms around me for reassurance, none of our families were that interested so it was just us together in this part of our worlds.
"You'll be there as well Jackson. You were third in the race, that's just as good as second or first and you know it."
"Then perhaps would you stop degrading yourself about how you won't make it into the academy?"
"Got yourself a deal there McCoy." I smirked at him and turned back to the board. My face dropped, I felt my jaw land onto the ground, my eyes widened with shock. I couldn't believe this at all...
"Oh. My. God. You made it. You came first! Karla! You made it! You came first!" Jackson yelled, jumping up and down. Tears clouded my sight, I couldn't believe. I honestly couldn't believe it!
"I did it." I whispered as the tears started to overflow and made a path down my face. Jackson still jumping around me, shouting with pure joy. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth and this time I let it bloom into a full on grin, teeth and all, as I soon started to laugh with joy. I had made it, I could go to the academy and I could achieve my dreams now and nothing going to stop that anymore. No doubt. No hesitation. I'm going to go professional and I will be amazing and I'll be another little girl's or boy's idol for what they want to be from then on.
