Why do you need food?

Your whole body is made from the food you eat and all your energy comes from food. Without food you would not be able to move around, keep warm or get better when you injure yourself. You need lots of different types of food in order to feel and look good. When you have finished reading this book; you should  know much more about what you eat and how it affects you. It tells you which foods are good for you, which are not so good and why.

Nutrients
Foods is made up of lots of different things. Those which your body needs in order to work properly, grow and repair itself, are called nutrients.
Nutrients have different jobs, though many also work together or need the presence of others to work properly.

Protein
Protein is used to build your body. Almost 20% of your weight is protein. Meat, fish and milk are good sources of protein.

Carbohydrate
Carbohydrate gives you energy. Bread and cereal contain a lot of carbohydrate.

Fat
Your body can store fat and use it later for energy. Meat fat, butter and oils are almost pure fat.
